In this paper, a technique for compensating for the polarisation mode dispersion of a 10 Gbit/s non-return to zero (NRZ) installed fiber link (45 km, 80 ps mean differential group delay), using a variable polarisation delay line and a set of polarisation controllers is presented.
Abstract
A technique for compensating for the polarisation mode dispersion of a 10 Gbit/s non-return to zero (NRZ) installed fibre link (45 km, 80 ps mean differential group delay), using a variable polarisation delay line and a set of polarisation controllers is presented. The variation of the output polarisation with frequency over the signal bandwidth was monitored using a frequency-resolving Stokes-polarimeter. A control loop is used to minimise the RMS deviation of the polarisation state at the receiver.

Automatic PMD compensation at 40 Gbit/s and 80 Gbit/s using a 3-dimensional DOP evaluation for feedback

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors demonstrate that polarization scrambling combined with degree of polarization evaluation enables polarization mode dispersion (PMD) compensation without feedback fading due to varying input polarization, and demonstrate that PMD of an installed fiber as well as PMD in an emulator can be successfully compensated.

Analysis of PMD compensators with fixed DGD using importance sampling

TL;DR: In this article, the authors use importance sampling to analyze polarization-mode dispersion compensators with a constant differential group delay (DGD) element and show that the optimum value of the fixed DGD element of the compensator can reduce the outage probability by several orders of magnitude, even though it does not provide a substantial reduction of the average penalty due to polarization mode dispersion.

Measurement of the group-delay difference between the principal states of polarization on a low-birefringence terrestrial fiber cable.

TL;DR: Measurements of the frequency dependence of the state of polarization at the end of a low-birefringence long-cabled (50-km) optical fiber using the Poincaré sphere representation find the principal states of polarization and their group-delay difference.
