System Impedance Measurement with a Three-Phase Converter

Abstract: Grid-connected converters are often used to feed power to the grid from renewable energy sources such as wind and solar farms. The stability of these grid-connected converters depends on the ratio between the converter output impedance and the grid impedance. This thesis studies impedance measurement in the dq-domain using wideband excitation signals. The aim of this thesis is to develop a software module to converter firmware that enables the converter to inject an excitation signal and measure the voltage and current responses. Impedance measurement system is tested using Simulink® simulations and the results are verified in laboratory environment. The simulation and measurement results show that wideband excitation signals can be used to accurately identify the direct components of the converter output impedance, but the measurements of the cross-impedances are highly susceptible to noise and measurement inaccuracies.
