The objective of COST 239 (Ultra-High Capacity Optical Transmission Networks) is to evaluate the feasibility of an optical overlay network interconnecting major cities within Europe. This European Optical Network employs wavelength routing to provide the required interconnection between network nodes. The study has a number of key activities and achievements relating to traffic modelling, transmission, network topologies and dimensioning, and protection strategies. In this paper the emphasis is on network rather than transmission aspects.read more

Fast IP Network Recovery Using Multiple Routing Configurations
TL;DR: This paper presents a new recovery scheme called Multiple Routing Configurations (MRC), based on keeping additional routing information in the routers, and allows packet forwarding to continue on an alternative output link immediately after the detection of a failure.

Optimal configuration of p-cycles in WDM networks
TL;DR: This work develops optimization models for the configuration of the cycles and applies them on a case study for a pan-European network, showing that p-cycles achieve high efficiency.

Multiple routing configurations for fast IP network recovery
TL;DR: This paper presents a new recovery scheme called Multiple Routing Configurations (MRC), and analyzes its performance with respect to scalability, backup path lengths, and load distribution after a failure.

Energy Efficient Big Data Networks: Impact of Volume and Variety
TL;DR: The results revealed that up to 52% and 47% power saving can be achieved by the EEBDN approach compared to the CBDN approach, under the impact of volume and variety scenarios, respectively.

Improved model for European international telephony traffic
TL;DR: A new model for European international telephony traffic is given that improves on the author's earlier PD model and introduces penetration factors to provide a far better match to actual traffic data than the use of population and distance alone.
