Aperiodic crystals: A contradictio in terminis?

TL;DR: The notion of quasiperiodicity was introduced in this paper, which is a necessary condition for having a crystalline phase is lattice periodicity, but it has become clear in the last decades that there are physical systems with many properties of the usual crystalline state but without three-dimensional lattice periodsicity.

A two dimensional aperiodic dense tiling

TL;DR: Using the modified Voronoi construction of Olamy and Alexander for the acceptance domain in perpendicular space of an aperiodic crystal, it is possible to build in a systematic way a dense aperiodical tiling, i.e. made of circles (in d = 2) or of spheres (in D = 3) which are in contract.

Special lines of quasilattices. I. The case of irreducible quasilattices in two and three dimensions

TL;DR: In this paper, a general theory for special lines in quasilattices is developed, and the author classifies completely the special lines of the three Bravais classes of icosahedral quasILattices in three dimensions and another three of n-gonal quasils in two dimensions, where n=8, 10 and 12.
