TLDR
Silicon, a relatively unknown trace element in nutritional research, has been uniquely localized in active calcification sites in young bone and is suggested to be associated with calcium in an early stage of calcification.Abstract:
Silicon, a relatively unknown trace element in nutritional research, has been uniquely localized in active calcification sites in young bone. Silicon increases directly with calcium at relatively low calcium concentrations and falls below the detection limit at compositions approaching hydroxyapatite. It is suggested that silicon is associated with calcium in an early stage of calcification.read more

A review of the biological response to ionic dissolution products from bioactive glasses and glass-ceramics
TL;DR: This review comprehensively covers literature reports which have investigated specifically the effect of dissolution products of silicate bioactive glasses and glass-ceramics in relation to osteogenesis and angiogenesis and focuses on the ion release kinetics of the materials and the specific effect of the released ionic dissolution products on human cell behaviour.

The essential trace elements
TL;DR: Marginal or severe trace element imbalances can be considered risk factors for several diseases of public health importance, but proof of cause and effect relationships will depend on a more complete understanding of basic mechanisms of action and on better analytical procedures and functional tests to determine marginal trace element status in man.

A zonal analysis of inorganic and organic constituents of the epiphysis during endochondral calcification
TL;DR: A dissection procedure has been devised to permit zonal analysis of the epiphyseal plate of fetal calf leg bones for their content of electrolyte and organic constituents, as well as for density, ash and moisture, which showed that as ash content and density increased, water content decreased.

Chemical analysis and the stoichiometry of apatite
TL;DR: In this paper, an exhaustive analysis of apatite is presented, and the composition of this sample is discussed with respect to purity and stoichiometry, and an analytical technique which is capable of yielding accurate results with most natural phosphate rocks and minerals are described in detail.
