TLDR
A series of long-chain 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium (LSM) and tetrafluoroborate (TFL) anions, including trifluoromethanesulfonate (OTf) and bis(trifluorsulfonyl)imide (TFI), have been synthesized and characterized as mentioned in this paper.Abstract:
A series of long-chain 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium salts ([Cn−mim]X, n = 12−18) containing the anions, chloride, bromide, trifluoromethanesulfonate (OTf), and bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TFI), have been synthesized and characterized. The salts have amphiphilic characteristics, and the thermotropic phase behavior of these salts and the analogous tetrafluoroborate salt has been investigated by variable temperature small-angle X-ray scattering, polarizing optical microscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. The salts form lamellar, sheetlike arrays in the crystalline phase and an enantiomeric smectic liquid crystalline phase at higher temperatures, except for the salts containing the bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide anion which melt directly to form isotropic liquids. The nature of the anion influences the size of the interlayer spacing in both the crystal and in the mesophase. The interlayer spacing in the mesophase is largest for the anions with the greatest ability to form a three-dimensio...read more

Nanoscale Segregation in Room Temperature Ionic Liquids
TL;DR: This study provides the first experimental evidence of the existence of nanoscale heterogeneities in neat liquid and supercooled RTILs, such as 1-alkyl-3-methyl imidazolium-based salts, using X-ray diffraction, showing a behavior that resembles the density one only below the glass transition, thus suggesting a complex behavior above this temperature.

Physical Properties of Ionic Liquids: Database and Evaluation
TL;DR: In this article, a comprehensive database on physical properties of ionic liquids (ILs), collected from 109 kinds of literature sources in the period from 1984 through 2004, has been presented, which includes 1680 pieces of data on the physical properties for 588 available ILs, from which 276 kinds of cations and 55 kinds of anions were extracted.

Aggregation behavior of aqueous solutions of ionic liquids
TL;DR: The aggregation behavior in aqueous solutions of three ionic liquids based on the 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium cation has been investigated by means of surface tension, conductivity, and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements.
