TLDR
This work studies the problems of makespan minimization (load balancing), knapsack, and bin packing when the jobs have stochastic processing requirements or sizes and obtains quasi-polynomial time approximation schemes for all three problems.

Dynamic Placement of Virtual Machines for Managing SLA Violations

TL;DR: A dynamic server migration and consolidation algorithm is introduced and is shown to provide substantial improvement over static server consolidation in reducing the amount of required capacity and the rate of service level agreement violations.

Application Performance Management in Virtualized Server Environments

TL;DR: This paper introduces the concept of server consolidation using virtualization and point out associated issues that arise in the area of application performance, and shows how some of these problems can be solved by monitoring key performance metrics and using the data to trigger migration of virtual machines within physical servers.

TL;DR: This work forms the VM consolidation into a Stochastic Bin Packing problem and proposes an online packing algorithm by which the number of servers required is within equation of the optimum for any ∈ > 0.

A Polynomial Time Approximation Scheme for the Multiple Knapsack Problem

TL;DR: A polynomial time approximation scheme (PTAS) for MKP, which appears to be the strongest special case of GAP that is not APX-hard, and a PTAS-preserving reduction from an arbitrary instance of MKP to an instance with distinct sizes and profits.
Proceedings ArticleDOI

A PTAS for the multiple knapsack problem

TL;DR: The main result of this paper is a polynomial time approximation scheme for MKP, which helps demarcate the boundary at which instances of GAP become APX-hard.

Bounds for certain multiprocessing anomalies

TL;DR: In this paper, precise bounds are derived for several anomalies of this type in a multiprocessing system composed of many identical processing units operating in parallel, and they show that an increase in the number of processing units can cause an increased total length of time needed to process a fixed set of tasks.
