Six studies investigate whether and how distant future time perspective facilitates abstract thinking and impedes concrete thinking by altering the level at which mental representations are construed. In Experiments 1-3, participants who envisioned their lives and imagined themselves engaging in a task 1 year later as opposed to the next day subsequently performed better on a series of insight tasks. In Experiments 4 and 5 a distal perspective was found to improve creative generation of abstract solutions. Moreover, Experiment 5 demonstrated a similar effect with temporal distance manipulated indirectly, by making participants imagine their lives in general a year from now versus tomorrow prior to performance. In Experiment 6, distant time perspective undermined rather than enhanced analytical problem solving.read more

Construal-Level Theory of Psychological Distance
Yaacov Trope,Nira Liberman +1 more
TL;DR: Supporting this analysis, research shows that the various distances are cognitively related to each other, that theySimilarly influence and are influenced by level of mental construal, and that they similarly affect prediction, preference, and action.

Constructive and Unconstructive Repetitive Thought.
TL;DR: Of the existing models of RT, it is proposed that an elaborated version of the control theory account provides the best theoretical framework to account for its distinct consequences.

A meta-analysis of 25 years of mood-creativity research: Hedonic tone, activation, or regulatory focus?
TL;DR: This meta-analysis synthesized 102 effect sizes reflecting the relation between specific moods and creativity revealing that positive moods produce more creativity than mood-neutral controls, and negative, deactivating moods were not associated with creativity, but negative, activating moods with an avoidance motivation and a prevention focus were associated with lower creativity.

Construal Levels and Psychological Distance: Effects on Representation, Prediction, Evaluation, and Behavior
TL;DR: Research has shown that different dimensions of psychological distance affect mental construal and that these construals, in turn, guide prediction, evaluation, and behavior.

Construal Levels and Self-Control
TL;DR: High-level construals led to decreased preferences for immediate over delayed outcomes, greater physical endurance, stronger intentions to exert self- control, and less positive evaluations of temptations that undermine self-control.
