Spectral Methods: What They Can and Cannot do for Climatic Time Series

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe the connections between time series analysis and nonlinear dynamics, discuss signal-to-noise enhancement, and present some of the novel methods for spectral analysis.
Journal ArticleDOI

Tune It Down to Live It Up? Rapid, Nongenomic Effects of Cortisol on the Human Brain

TL;DR: The data demonstrate that a physiological concentration of cortisol profoundly affects the functioning and perfusion of the human brain in vivo via a rapid, nongenomic mechanism, and changes in neuronal functioning suggest that cortisol acts on the thalamic relay of background as well as on task-specific sensory information, allowing focus and facilitation of adaptation to challenges.

The impact of special days in call arrivals forecasting: A neural network approach to modelling special days

TL;DR: This study evaluates the use of a variety of univariate time series forecasting methods for forecasting intraday call arrivals in the presence of outliers and argues that the relative complexity of ANNs over standard statistical models is offset by the simplicity of coding multiple and unknown effects during outlying periods.

Time series analysis of data for sea surface temperature and upwelling components from the southwest coast of Portugal

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors compared sea surface temperature (SST) to the upwelling conditions off the southwest coast of Portugal using statistical analyses of publically available data and found that a statistically significant incremental increase in SST was more pronounced during the last decade.

Regional climate signal vs. local noise: a two-dimensional viewof water isotopes in Antarctic firn at Kohnen Station, Dronning MaudLand

TL;DR: In this article, the authors studied the stable-water isotope composition of firn at Kohnen Station, Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica and derived a statistical noise model which successfully explains the trench data.
