Implementing and innovating marine monitoring approaches for assessing marine environmental status
Roberto Danovaro,Laura Carugati,Marco Berzano,Abigail E. Cahill,Abigail E. Cahill,Susana Carvalho,Anne Chenuil,Cinzia Corinaldesi,Sónia Cristina,Romain David,Antonio Dell'Anno,Nina Dzhembekova,Esther Garcés,Joseph M. Gasol,Priscila Goela,Jean-Pierre Féral,Isabel Ferrera,Rodney M. Forster,Andrey A. Kurekin,Eugenio Rastelli,Veselka Marinova,Peter I. Miller,Snejana Moncheva,Alice Newton,John K. Pearman,Sophie Pitois,Albert Reñé,Naiara Rodríguez-Ezpeleta,Vincenzo Saggiomo,Stefan G. H. Simis,Stefan G. H. Simis,Kremena Stefanova,Christian Wilson,Marco Lo Martire,Silvestro Greco,Sabine Cochrane,Olga Mangoni,Ángel Borja +37 more
TL;DR: Several recently developed methodologies and technologies to improve marine biodiversity indicators and monitoring methods can present clear advantages in accuracy, efficiency and cost.
Journal ArticleDOI
Time series analysis of data for sea surface temperature and upwelling components from the southwest coast of Portugal
Priscila Goela,Priscila Goela,Clara Cordeiro,Clara Cordeiro,Sergei Danchenko,Sergei Danchenko,John Icely,Sónia Cristina,Sónia Cristina,Alice Newton +9 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors compared sea surface temperature (SST) to the upwelling conditions off the southwest coast of Portugal using statistical analyses of publically available data and found that a statistically significant incremental increase in SST was more pronounced during the last decade.
Journal ArticleDOI
Using CHEMTAX to evaluate seasonal and interannual dynamics of the phytoplankton community off the South-west coast of Portugal
Priscila Goela,Priscila Goela,Sergei Danchenko,John Icely,L.M. Lubián,L.M. Lubián,Sónia Cristina,Sónia Cristina,Alice Newton +8 more
TL;DR: The pigment results showed that diatoms dominated from early spring to summer, coinciding with upwelling conditions, while cryptophytes, prymnesiophytes and prasinophytes dominated in autumn and winter, coincide with seasonal stratification.
Journal ArticleDOI
Using remote sensing as a support to the implementation of the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive in SW Portugal
Sónia Cristina,Sónia Cristina,John Icely,Priscila Goela,Priscila Goela,Tomás Ángel DelValls,Alice Newton +6 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the quality of the remote sensing product Algal Pigment Index 1 (API 1) from the MEdium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) sensor of the European Space Agency for ocean colour products can be effectively validated with in situ data from three stations off the SW Iberian Peninsula.
Journal ArticleDOI
Which ocean colour algorithm for MERIS in North West European waters
Gavin H. Tilstone,Silvana Mallor-Hoya,Francis Gohin,André Belo Couto,Carolina Sá,Priscila Goela,Sónia Cristina,Ruth L. Airs,John Icely,Marco Zuhlke,Steve Groom +10 more
TL;DR: In this article, the accuracy of a range of ocean color Chl a algorithms for use with Medium Imaging Resolution Spectrometer (MERIS) Level 2 (L2) Remote Sensing Reflectance (R rs ), using two different atmospheric correction (AC) processors (COASTCOLOUR and MERIS Ground Segment processor version 8.0), were assessed in North West European waters.
