TLDR
The Björk-Shiley valve is durable and effective, but, as with other devices, is associated with problems of thromboembolism and thrombosis.

Eleven-year experience with composite graft replacement of the ascending aorta and aortic valve.

TL;DR: The satisfactory results with extended follow-up support the continued use of the composite graft technique as the preferred method of treatment for patients with annuloaortic ectasia or recurrent aneurysms of the sinuses of Valsalva and for patients who require aortic valve replacement.

Afterload mismatch in aortic and mitral valve disease: Implications for surgical therapy

TL;DR: Patients with severe aortic stenosis and symptoms should not be denied operation because of impaired cardiac function, and confirmation of these findings by cardiac catheterization and consideration of operation are advisable even in patients with minimal symptoms.
Journal ArticleDOI

Thrombotic and bleeding complications of prosthetic heart valves.

TL;DR: The adequacy of warfarin anticoagulation is the most important factor affecting thrombotic and bleeding complications in patients with mechanical valves and over shadows the dubious importance of other phenomena such as atrial fibrillation and left atrial thrombus.
Journal ArticleDOI

Death and other time-related events after valve replacement.

TL;DR: A total of 1533 patients received primary aortic and/or mitral valve replacement, with or without tricuspid valve surgery or other associated cardiac procedures, from January 1, 1975, to July 1, 1979, and 10 modes of death were identified, each with its unique hazard function and risk factors.
Journal ArticleDOI

Predictors of long-term outcome after percutaneous balloon mitral valvuloplasty.

TL;DR: The long-term outcome after this procedure can be predicted on the basis of patients' base-line characteristics, and patients with two or three risk factors had a predicted five-year event-free survival rate of only 13 to 41 percent.

Nonparametric Estimation from Incomplete Observations

TL;DR: In this article, the product-limit (PL) estimator was proposed to estimate the proportion of items in the population whose lifetimes would exceed t (in the absence of such losses), without making any assumption about the form of the function P(t).

Regression Models and Life-Tables

TL;DR: The analysis of censored failure times is considered in this paper, where the hazard function is taken to be a function of the explanatory variables and unknown regression coefficients multiplied by an arbitrary and unknown function of time.
Journal ArticleDOI

Covariance analysis of censored survival data.

TL;DR: The use of regression models for making covariance adjustments in the comparsion of survival curves is illustrated by application to a clinical trial of maintenance therapy for childhood leukemia.

Ten years’ experience with the Björk-Shiley tilting disc valve

TL;DR: The original Delrin disc functions excellently after 10 years in the human circulation, the durability of the prosthetic valve was further prolonged by the introduction of pyrolytic carbon as disc material and the new convex-concave model decreases the stagnation zone behind the disc, decreases emboli, and has a lower gradient.
