Compared to the conventional finger photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor that is widely used in clinical practice to assess arterial blood oxygen saturation and heart rate, an imaging PPG (IPPG) system can remotely provide multiple contactless measurements across large areas of the body to give valuable vascular and cardiovascular information. The IPPG technique is noncontact and can be a low cost and easy to use tool for medical diagnostics as well as in biological-medical research of the cardiovascular system. The technology and optical modeling relating to this technique continue to be developed, but already IPPG can provide potentially useful information for investigating a number of clinical and physiological conditions. In this chapter, we will overview a range of different IPPG applications, particularly beyond the standard PPG assessment of pulse oximetry, and the monitoring of heart and respiratory rates. These applications include the intraoperative monitoring of cerebral microcirculation, the visualization of skin capillary function across the body, assessing the circulatory-system reactivity in response to functional testing, evaluating the functional reserve of cerebral and musculocutaneous vessels, instrumental identification of scleroderma, and the contactless assessment of endothelial function.

Imaging Photoplethysmography as a Reliable Tool for Monitoring Tissue Perfusion during Open Brain and Abdominal Surgeries

A method for heart rate measurement in a photoplethysmograph (PPG) heart rate monitor device is provided that includes performing motion compensation on a PPG signal wherein a motion compensated PPG signal PPGaccX is generated with reference to an X-axis acceleration signal, a motion compensated PPG signal PPGaccY is generated with reference to a Y-axis acceleration signal, and a motion compensated PPG signal PPGaccZ is generated with reference to a Z-axis acceleration signal, combining PPGaccX, PPGaccY, and PPGaccZ to generate a final motion compensated PPG signal, wherein a first weight is applied PPGaccX, a second weight is applied to PPGaccY, and a third weight is applied to PPGaccZ, performing a single Fourier Transform (FT) on the final motion compensated PPG signal to generate a frequency domain PPG signal; and estimating a heart rate based on the frequency domain PPG signal.

AbstractWith a surge in online medical advising remote monitoring of patient vitals is required. This can be facilitated with the Remote Photoplethysmography (rPPG) techniques that compute vital signs from facial videos. It involves processing video frames to obtain skin pixels, extracting the cardiac data from it and applying signal processing filters to extract the Blood Volume Pulse (BVP) signal. Different algorithms are applied to the BVP signal to estimate the various vital signs. We implemented a web application framework to measure a person’s Heart Rate (HR), Heart Rate Variability (HRV), Oxygen Saturation (SpO\(_{2}\)), Respiration Rate (RR), Blood Pressure (BP), and stress from the face video. The rPPG technique is highly sensitive to illumination and motion variation. The web application guides the users to reduce the noise due to these variations and thereby yield a cleaner BVP signal. The accuracy and robustness of the framework was validated with the help of volunteers, and their privacy was protected using face masking techniques.KeywordsRemote photoplethysmographyDeep learningVital signs measurementComputer vision
