The calcium antagonist nifedipine inhibits arterial smooth muscle cell proliferation.

TLDR
The results raise the possibility that nifedipine may be used to prevent atherogenesis and to inhibit progression of fibromuscular lesions by interfering with the proliferation of arterial smooth muscle cells.

A paradigm for restenosis based on cell biology: clues for the development of new preventive therapies.

TL;DR: It is hypothesized that restenosis is a manifestation of the general wound healing response expressed specifically in vascular tissue, and probably requires both creation of the largest possible residual lumen and substantial inhibition of intimal hyperplasia.

Growth regulatory properties of endothelins

TL;DR: Evidence now suggests that the three isoforms of endothelins (ET-1 and the other two related isopeptides, ET-2 and ET-3) regulate growth in several of these cells, suggesting an important role mediating vascular remodeling in some cardiovascular diseases.

Resolved and unresolved issues in the prevention and treatment of coronary artery disease: A workshop consensus statement☆☆☆

TL;DR: Many opportunities exist for obtaining further information regarding the underlying pathophysiology, the fundamental mechanisms of action of interventions designed to prevent and/or treat the development of myocardial ischemia and cardiac failure and for effecting favorably the natural history of various forms of heart disease.

Differentiated Properties and Proliferation of Arterial Smooth Muscle Cells in Culture

TL;DR: The cell culture technique has contributed substantially to knowledge of smooth muscle differentiation and growth and has been crucial in exploring the role of these cells in vascular disease and developing new therapeutic strategies to cope with major causes of human death and disability.
Journal ArticleDOI

Pharmacology of smooth muscle cell replication.

TL;DR: This review summarizes pharmacological studies of smooth muscle cell proliferation in vitro and in vivo and identifies specific mediators of proliferation that are implicated by drugs binding with high affinity to enzymes or receptors.

The smooth muscle cell in culture

TL;DR: The current state of knowledge of both vascular and visceral smooth muscle in cell and tissue culture and the variety of preparations used for different experimental purposes are described in this article, where the authors refer to organ culture of smooth muscle tissues only periodically.
