TLDR
A review of global induction studies of the Earth's crust and upper mantle using geomagnetic deep-sounding and magnetotelluric techniques is presented in this paper, with a discussion of studies in the UK and Kenya.
Abstract
In addition to a review of global induction studies of the Earth, the results of recent investigations of the electrical conductivity of the lunar interior are presented. Information on the magnetic environment of Venus, Mercury, Mars and Jupiter is tabulated, there being insufficient data to infer their electrical conductivity. Regional induction studies of the Earth's crust and upper mantle using geomagnetic deep-sounding and magnetotelluric techniques are summarised with a fuller discussion of studies in the UK and Kenya. The instrumentation used in observatory, field and laboratory studies is described.

The geomagnetic coast effect

TL;DR: The geomagnetic coast effect as mentioned in this paper is a phenomenon where the vertical component of the magnetic variation field is abnormally large near most coastlines and correlates positively with the inland horizontal component.

A magnetotelluric and magnetovariational study of the Gregory Rift Valley, Kenya

TL;DR: In this article, it is shown that the data require the presence of conductive material at a depth less than 8 km below the rift floor but that the required thickness of this upper crustal conductor (> 5 km) is too great to be explained in terms of a conductive infill of the rift.

Geomagnetic induction studies in Southern Scotland

TL;DR: In this article, a review of various regional MT studies, the geophysical significance of conductivity measurements and the known geology and geophysics of the Southern Uplands region are given.

An analogue model study of electromagnetic induction in the British Isles region

TL;DR: In this article, the behavior of electric and magnetic field variations over the British Isles region was studied using a scaled laboratory analogue model and the model source frequencies used simulate periods of 20 min to 2 h in the geophysical scale.
Journal ArticleDOI

Electrical conductivity anomalies in the earth

TL;DR: In this paper, conductivity anomalies are classified into two types: anomalies originating in the crust and in the upper mantle, and magnetic and gravity anomalies are also often found over the conductivity anomaly.

Basic theory of the magneto-telluric method of geophysical prospecting

TL;DR: In this article, a solution for the horizontal components of the electric and magnetic fields at the surface due to telluric currents in the earth is obtained for two-and three-layer problems.

The Magnetotelluric Method in the Exploration of Sedimentary Basins

K. Vozoff
- 01 Feb 1972 -
TL;DR: In this article, the theory of magnetotelluric (MT) and some of the experimental, analytical, and interpretive techniques developed for its use in petroleum exploration in the past five years are described.

Geomagnetic Variations and the Electrical Conductivity of the Upper Mantle

TL;DR: The electrical conductivity of the upper mantle can be determined by comparing the measured response of the Earth to magnetic variations of all frequencies with the theoretical response of particular conductivity distributions as mentioned in this paper.

The effect of pressure on the electrical resistivity of water‐saturated crystalline rocks

TL;DR: In this article, the electrical resistivity of eight igneous rocks and two crystalline limestones was measured at pressures to 10 kb, and the dependence of resistivity on temperature, porosity, and pore fluid salinity suggested that conduction was primarily electrolytic throughout the entire pressure range.

Magnetic Field Observations near Mercury: Preliminary Results from Mariner 10.

TL;DR: The complete body of data favors the preliminary conclusion that Mercury has an intrinsic magnetic field, which represents a major scientific discovery in planetary magnetism and will have considerable impact on studies of the origin of the solar system.
