Abstract
This paper proposes that idiosyncratic firm-level fluctuations can explain an important part of aggregate shocks, and provide a microfoundation for aggregate productivity shocks. Existing research has focused on using aggregate shocks to explain business cycles, arguing that individual firm shocks average out in aggregate. I show that this argument breaks down if the distribution of firm sizes is fat-tailed, as documented empirically. The idiosyncratic movements of the largest 100 firms in the US appear to explain about one third of variations in output and the Solow residual. This "granular" hypothesis suggests new directions for macroeconomic research, in particular that macroeconomic questions can be clarified by looking at the behavior of large firms. This paper's ideas and analytical results may also be useful to think about the fluctuations of other economic aggregates, such as exports or the trade balance.

Regulatory Reform and Convergence in Banking: The Case of China

TL;DR: The authors examined the effect of regulatory reform on the asset allocation and capitalization of Chinese banks, 2002 to 2007, a period following China's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Sectoral reallocations, real estate shocks, and productivity divergence in Europe

TL;DR: In this paper , the authors investigated the role of sectoral reallocations in the divergence of productivity in Europe, based on a database for 33 sectors and 14 countries between 1995 and 2015.

Bounded rationality and animal spirits: a fluctuation-response approach to Slutsky matrices

TL;DR: This paper derived a general fluctuation-response formula that relates the Slutsky matrix to spontaneous fluctuations of consumption rather than to response to changing prices and budget, and then showed that the symmetry of the matrix remains valid even when agents are only boundedly rational but non-interacting.

The empirics of granular origins: some challenges and solutions with an application to the UK

TL;DR: In this article , the effects of firm-level microeconomic fluctuations on aggregate productivity in the United Kingdom were studied and it was shown that idiosyncratic firm level shocks matter for the UK; the "granular residual" can explain around 30% of aggregate UK productivity dynamics.

Monetary Policy Shocks and Input–Output Characteristics of Production Networks

TL;DR: In this article , the authors revisited the production network's role in transmitting monetary policy shocks and found that measures from the input-output literature, like average propagation length or fields of influence, amplify the negative impact of the monetary policies, while the forward linkage dampens them.

Emergence of Scaling in Random Networks

Time to build and aggregate fluctuations

TL;DR: In this article, a general equilibrium model is developed and fitted to U.S. quarterly data for the post-war period, with the assumption that more than one time period is required for the construction of new productive capital and the non-time-separable utility function that admits greater intertemporal substitution of leisure.
