Abstract
This paper proposes that idiosyncratic firm-level fluctuations can explain an important part of aggregate shocks, and provide a microfoundation for aggregate productivity shocks. Existing research has focused on using aggregate shocks to explain business cycles, arguing that individual firm shocks average out in aggregate. I show that this argument breaks down if the distribution of firm sizes is fat-tailed, as documented empirically. The idiosyncratic movements of the largest 100 firms in the US appear to explain about one third of variations in output and the Solow residual. This "granular" hypothesis suggests new directions for macroeconomic research, in particular that macroeconomic questions can be clarified by looking at the behavior of large firms. This paper's ideas and analytical results may also be useful to think about the fluctuations of other economic aggregates, such as exports or the trade balance.

Heterogeneous firm dynamics and price setting behavior

TL;DR: In this paper , the authors employ an innovative approach by introducing firm heterogeneity into a micro-founded Calvo-type partial equilibrium model to study price setting behavior and demonstrate that granularity is a potential solution to the reset price inflation puzzle.

Network-based measures of systemic risk in Korea

- 14 Jun 2023 -
TL;DR: In this paper , the authors assess potential systemic risk concerns arising from the high concentration of the economy in large business groups and a few export-oriented sectors using the econometric measures of commonality and connectedness applied to stock returns.

Stochastic evolution of distributions and functional Bollinger bands

TL;DR: In this article , the authors use mixture of percentile functions to model credit spread evolution, which allows to obtain a flexible description of indices and their components at the same time, and show regularity results in order to extend mixture percentile to the dynamic case.

A cross-sectional analysis of growth and profit rate distribution: the Spanish case

TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyse the conditional properties of the empirical distributions depending on the size of the firms and business cycle phase, and find that the largest firms are more robust to downturns compared to the small firms, given their invariant distributional characteristics during crisis periods.

Firm Volatility and IT

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue that IT usage, which enhances firms' information processing capability, is an important variable which affects firm level volatility and build a general equilibrium model with heterogeneous firm productivity levels.

Time to build and aggregate fluctuations

TL;DR: In this article, a general equilibrium model is developed and fitted to U.S. quarterly data for the post-war period, with the assumption that more than one time period is required for the construction of new productive capital and the non-time-separable utility function that admits greater intertemporal substitution of leisure.
