Abstract
This paper proposes that idiosyncratic firm-level fluctuations can explain an important part of aggregate shocks, and provide a microfoundation for aggregate productivity shocks. Existing research has focused on using aggregate shocks to explain business cycles, arguing that individual firm shocks average out in aggregate. I show that this argument breaks down if the distribution of firm sizes is fat-tailed, as documented empirically. The idiosyncratic movements of the largest 100 firms in the US appear to explain about one third of variations in output and the Solow residual. This "granular" hypothesis suggests new directions for macroeconomic research, in particular that macroeconomic questions can be clarified by looking at the behavior of large firms. This paper's ideas and analytical results may also be useful to think about the fluctuations of other economic aggregates, such as exports or the trade balance.

Financing benefit from exporting: An indirect identification approach

TL;DR: In this article, an indirect identification strategy with application to Chinese privately owned enterprises (POEs) is proposed, and the authors examine whether and how firms obtain such financing benefits from exporting and find that although exporting can alleviate financial constraints, it does so mainly through the mechanism of sales diversification.

Nowcasting Business Cycle Turning Points with Stock Networks and Machine Learning

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a granular framework that makes use of advanced statistical methods to approximate developments in economy-wide expected corporate earnings, and evaluate the dynamic network structure of stock returns in the United States as a proxy for the transmission of shocks through the economy and identify node positions (firms) whose connectedness provides a signal for economic growth.

Financial Constraints, Managerial Incentives and the Scope of the Firm

TL;DR: In this article, the authors propose a theory where centralization increases the correlation across projects by exposing them to the shock of the same CEO, and they show that such increased correlation enhances rather than reduces the firm's ability to relax financial constraints because more correlated shocks can better take advantage of cross pledging possibilities.

Financial crises, firm‐level shocks and large downturns: Evidence from Greece

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used a large and representative dataset on Greek firms covering all sectors of the economy over the period 2000-2014, and found that the contribution of firm-specific shocks to the volatility of aggregate sales growth increased substantially during the Greek financial crisis.

Idiosyncratic Shocks and Aggregate Fluctuations in an Emerging Market

TL;DR: In this article , the authors provided the first assessment of the contribution of idiosyncratic shocks to aggregate fluctuations in an emerging market using confidential data on the universe of Chilean firms, and they found that these shocks account for more than 40 percent of the volatility of aggregate sales.

Emergence of Scaling in Random Networks

TL;DR: A model based on these two ingredients reproduces the observed stationary scale-free distributions, which indicates that the development of large networks is governed by robust self-organizing phenomena that go beyond the particulars of the individual systems.

Time to build and aggregate fluctuations

TL;DR: In this article, a general equilibrium model is developed and fitted to U.S. quarterly data for the post-war period, with the assumption that more than one time period is required for the construction of new productive capital and the non-time-separable utility function that admits greater intertemporal substitution of leisure.

Probability: Theory and Examples

TL;DR: In this paper, a comprehensive introduction to probability theory covering laws of large numbers, central limit theorem, random walks, martingales, Markov chains, ergodic theorems, and Brownian motion is presented.
