Abstract
This paper proposes that idiosyncratic firm-level fluctuations can explain an important part of aggregate shocks, and provide a microfoundation for aggregate productivity shocks. Existing research has focused on using aggregate shocks to explain business cycles, arguing that individual firm shocks average out in aggregate. I show that this argument breaks down if the distribution of firm sizes is fat-tailed, as documented empirically. The idiosyncratic movements of the largest 100 firms in the US appear to explain about one third of variations in output and the Solow residual. This "granular" hypothesis suggests new directions for macroeconomic research, in particular that macroeconomic questions can be clarified by looking at the behavior of large firms. This paper's ideas and analytical results may also be useful to think about the fluctuations of other economic aggregates, such as exports or the trade balance.

Productivity improvement and economic growth: lessons from Japan

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the background of low labor productivity growth in Japan and proposed to encourage the flexible reallocation of management resources such as capital and labor by changing working process at the corporate level in accordance with changes in the socioeconomic environment and the advent of new technologies, as well as by improving efficiency in the labor and capital markets.

What is 'Firm Heterogeneity' in Trade Models? The Role of Quality, Scope, Markups and Cost

TL;DR: In this article, a structural model of heterogeneous multiproduct firms is proposed to examine the sources of firm heterogeneity emphasized in the recent trade and macro literatures using Nielsen barcode data on prices and sales.

Dynamic Networks and Asset Pricing

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors map the characteristics of the network connecting firms' fundamentals to the cross-section of expected returns, and show that "central" firms, active at transferring but relative immune to distress, have lower P/D ratios and higher expected returns.

Two-Sided Search in International Markets

TL;DR: The authors developed a dynamic model of the many-to-many matching processes through which international business relationships are formed, characterizing exporters' and importers' search efforts as functions of their type, their current portfolio of business partners, and the market conditions they face.

Cyclical Changes in Firm Volatility

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors estimate changes in firm-specific volatility in sales and earnings growth of US firms using an approach which better captures firmspecific volatility than commonly used dispersion measures do.

Emergence of Scaling in Random Networks

TL;DR: A model based on these two ingredients reproduces the observed stationary scale-free distributions, which indicates that the development of large networks is governed by robust self-organizing phenomena that go beyond the particulars of the individual systems.

Time to build and aggregate fluctuations

TL;DR: In this article, a general equilibrium model is developed and fitted to U.S. quarterly data for the post-war period, with the assumption that more than one time period is required for the construction of new productive capital and the non-time-separable utility function that admits greater intertemporal substitution of leisure.
