Abstract
This paper proposes that idiosyncratic firm-level fluctuations can explain an important part of aggregate shocks, and provide a microfoundation for aggregate productivity shocks. Existing research has focused on using aggregate shocks to explain business cycles, arguing that individual firm shocks average out in aggregate. I show that this argument breaks down if the distribution of firm sizes is fat-tailed, as documented empirically. The idiosyncratic movements of the largest 100 firms in the US appear to explain about one third of variations in output and the Solow residual. This "granular" hypothesis suggests new directions for macroeconomic research, in particular that macroeconomic questions can be clarified by looking at the behavior of large firms. This paper's ideas and analytical results may also be useful to think about the fluctuations of other economic aggregates, such as exports or the trade balance.

Financial Markets, the Real Economy, and Self-fulfilling Uncertainties

TL;DR: In this article, a model of informational interdependence between financial markets and the real economy, linking uncertainty to information production and aggregate economic activities, is developed, and the model characterizes self-fulfilling uncertainty traps with two steady state equilibria and a two-stage economic crisis in transitional dynamics.

Essays on econometric modelling of temporal networks

TL;DR: This thesis aims at contributing to this newborn field of literature which joins probability, economics, physics and sociology by proposing novel statistical and econometric methodologies for the study of the temporal evolution of network structures of medium-high dimension.

Dynamical Structure and Spectral Properties of Input-Output Networks

TL;DR: In this paper, a dynamic production network model featuring adjustment costs of changing inputs and thus gradual recovery from temporary TFP shocks is developed, where shocks to sectors that generate significant sales through distant linkages to the consumer are most damaging.

Welfare and Output with Income Effects and Taste Shocks

TL;DR: In this article, the authors characterize how welfare responds to changes in budget sets and technologies when preferences are non-homothetic or subject to shocks, in both partial and general equilibrium.

The granular nature of the great export collapse in German manufacturing industries, 2008/2009

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the micro-structure of the recent export collapse in manufacturing industries in Germany during the crisis of 2008/2009 and found that almost all of the decline in exports was due to negative changes of exports in firms that continue to export, while the decrease of exports due to export stoppers (at the so-called extensive margin) was tiny.

Emergence of Scaling in Random Networks

TL;DR: A model based on these two ingredients reproduces the observed stationary scale-free distributions, which indicates that the development of large networks is governed by robust self-organizing phenomena that go beyond the particulars of the individual systems.

Time to build and aggregate fluctuations

TL;DR: In this article, a general equilibrium model is developed and fitted to U.S. quarterly data for the post-war period, with the assumption that more than one time period is required for the construction of new productive capital and the non-time-separable utility function that admits greater intertemporal substitution of leisure.

Probability: Theory and Examples

TL;DR: In this paper, a comprehensive introduction to probability theory covering laws of large numbers, central limit theorem, random walks, martingales, Markov chains, ergodic theorems, and Brownian motion is presented.
