The integration of Six Sigma and lean management

TLDR
In this paper, the authors proposed a new lean Six Sigma (LSS) approach and provided a detailed description of its phases, and also presented the views on the integration benefits as well as on how Six Sigma compares to lean.
Abstract
Purpose – Lean and Six Sigma are the two most important continuous improvement (CI) methodologies for achieving operational and service excellence in any organization. The purpose of this paper is to explain how lean compares to the Six Sigma and outline the benefits for integrating them. Also, this paper discusses the existing models that describe how Six Sigma and lean fit together. A new detailed description for integrating Six Sigma and lean is developed to provide an improved approach for CI.Design/methodology/approach – The following research included proposals and discussion, which were mainly based on the authors' own findings and experience, in addition to a literature‐based review of some of the most common and traditional lean and Six Sigma models.Findings – The paper proposes a new lean Six Sigma (LSS) approach and provides a detailed description of its phases. The paper also presents the views on the integration benefits as well as on how Six Sigma compares to lean. Six Sigma and lean are rel...

Critical failure factors of Lean Six Sigma: a systematic literature review

TL;DR: In this article, a systematic literature review of 56 papers that were published on Lean, Six Sigma and LSS in well-known academic databases from 1995 to 2013 was conducted to explore the critical failure factors for LSS.

The integration of lean manufacturing, Six Sigma and sustainability: A literature review and future research directions for developing a specific model

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a review and an analysis of the literature concerning a possible model for integrating three management systems: lean manufacturing, Six Sigma and sustainability, and identify new opportunities and challenges that should be addressed by future studies.

A systematic review of Lean Six Sigma for the manufacturing industry

TL;DR: The most common themes within Lean Six Sigma in the manufacturing sector are explored, and any gaps in those themes that may be preventing users from getting the most benefit from their LSS strategy are identified.

Lean, Six Sigma and Lean Six Sigma: an analysis based on operations strategy

TL;DR: In this paper, a theoretical conceptual model was developed based on a review of the literature, followed by a exploratory research questions applied to manufacturing companies that use the lean, Six Sigma or LSS manufacturing models in southern Brazil.

Green lean and the need for six sigma.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors critically review the green lean approach and highlight its limitations; examine the compatibility of the green, lean and Six Sigma concepts; and propose Six Sigma, and specially its problem-solving methodology DMAIC, as an approach to help enhancing the effectiveness of green lean initiatives.

The genealogy of lean production

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigate the evolution of the research at the MIT International Motor Vehicle Program (IMVP) that led to the conception of the term "lean production" and investigate why the program was so influential in promoting the lean production concept.

Lean viewed as a philosophy

TL;DR: It is illustrated that, despite its discernible benefits, the implementation record suffers as the prevailing opinion fails to encapsulate that an aspiring lean enterprise shall only succeed if it views lean as a philosophy rather than another strategy.

Six Sigma: Definition and underlying theory

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors use the grounded theory approach and the scant literature available to propose an initial definition and theory of Six Sigma, and argue that although the tools and techniques in Six Sigma are strikingly similar to prior approaches to quality management, it provides an organizational structure not previously seen.
