Abstract
Murale is a European IST project that will develop 3D capture and visualisation technology for archaeology. The project will put special emphasis on the usability on the site, by the archaeologists themselves. The paper describes techniques that are being developed by three of the Murale partners in particular. These comprise two methods to generate 3D models of objects, and approaches to deal with the textures of materials and terrain. Put together with the database and visualisation expertise brought in by the other partners, Murale will not only contribute to the enhanced visualisation of archaeological sites and finds, but also to a faster and more complete documentation of the progress of excavations. The ancient city of Sagalassos, one of the major excavation sites in the eastern part of the Mediterranean, will be used as the primary test site.

Photorealism and non-photorealism in virtual heritage representation

TL;DR: It is argued that it is important to enhance the perception of realism, achieved both through photorealistic and non-photorealistic visualisation approaches, with interactivity, as illustrated by two example projects which develop prototype virtual environments created for specialists as well as novice users.

On 3D reconstruction of the old city of Xanthi. A minimum budget approach to virtual touring based on photogrammetry

TL;DR: In this paper, a 3D reconstruction of a small part of the old city of Xanthi is presented in order to produce realistic virtual walkthroughs for culture heritage promotion with a minimum budget and low cost infrastructure.

Computer-based, automatic recording and illustration of complex archaeological artifacts

TL;DR: A computerized automatic system to illustrate complex archaeological objects based on 3D scans of the artifacts that generates efficient, objective, accurate and simplified representations of complex objects and the designs on them from any number of required views.

Architectural Information Modelling for Virtual Heritage Application

TL;DR: This paper proposes the development of an approach similar to BIM, namely Architectural Information Modelling (AIM), which describes more theoretical and historical building knowledge instead of the explicit and component-based descriptions inside BIM.

Conservation of classical monuments : a study of anastylosis with case studies from Greece and Turkey

TL;DR: Anastylosis involves the reassembly of existing, but dispersed, members of a monument and is implemented within a framework for the preservation and presentation of ancient monuments as discussed by the authors, which is encountered throughout the world, but most often in the Mediterranean region.

Self-calibration and metric reconstruction in spite of varying and unknown internal camera parameters

TL;DR: A self-calibration method is presented which efficiently deals with all kinds of constraints on the internal camera parameters and a practical method is proposed which can retrieve metric reconstruction from image sequences obtained with uncalibrated zooming/focusing cameras.

A Perspective on Range Finding Techniques for Computer Vision

TL;DR: A variety of approaches to generalized range finding are surveyed and a perspective on their applicability and shortcomings in the context of computer vision studies is presented.

Self-Calibration and Metric Reconstruction Inspite of Varying and Unknown Intrinsic Camera Parameters

TL;DR: A theoretical proof is given which shows that the absence of skew in the image plane is sufficient to allow for self-calibration and a method to detect critical motion sequences is proposed.

Active optical range imaging sensors

TL;DR: In this survey, the relative capabilities of different sensors and sensing methods are evaluated using a figure of merit based on range accuracy, depth of field, and image acquisition time.

Color-Encoded Structured Light for Rapid Active Ranging

TL;DR: A novel strategy for rapid acquisition of the range map of a scene employing color-encoded structured light, which exists for the first time to acquire high-resolution range data in real time for modest cost.
