The reflection of electromagnetic waves from a rough surface

H. Davies
- Vol. 101, Iss: 7, pp 209-214
TLDR
In this article, the scattering and reflecting properties of surfaces which are perfectly conducting but which have random irregularities are investigated in a statistical manner, where the surface is assumed to be not too precipitous.
Abstract
The scattering and reflecting properties of surfaces which are perfectly conducting but which have random irregularities are investigated in a statistical manner. The surface is assumed to be not too precipitous. With a statistical model for the surface, the scattering of light by a disturbed water surface is considered, and the method is used to calculate the amount of sea clutter observed in centrimetric radar. A comparison with some observations is made.

A reflectance model for computer graphics

TL;DR: In this paper, the spectral energy distribution of the reflected light from an object made of a specific real material is obtained and a procedure for accurately reproducing the color associated with the spectrum is discussed.

Surface reflection: physical and geometrical perspectives

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of surface roughness on the three primary components of a reflectance model is analyzed in detail, and the conditions that determine the validity of the model are clearly stated.

Experimental study of scattering from characterized random surfaces

TL;DR: In this article, an experimental investigation of light scattering from random rough surfaces is described, whose height fluctuations approximately follow Gaussian statistics, are fabricated in photoresist with a metal overcoating, and the effects of multiple scattering are shown to be consistent with the major features of the observations.

A reflectance model for computer graphics

TL;DR: A new reflectance model for rendering computer synthesized images that describes the directional distribution of the reflected light and a color shift that occurs as the reflectance changes with incidence angle is presented.

Radar echoes from the sea surface at centimetre wave-lengths

H Davies, +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, an account is given of quantitative measurements of the echo obtained from the sea surface with radars operating at wave lengths of 1.25, 3 and 10 cm under various weather conditions from calm to very rough.
