TLDR
A direct relationship between the presence of anti-protease factors and growth of cells was shown with a wide variety of sera from different animals and man and the growth-promoting quality of serum was shown to be related to its titer against these enzymes.

Stimulation of clonal growth of normal fibroblasts with substrata coated with basic polymers

TL;DR: Several different types of normal human and chicken fibroblast-like cells show improved growth on polylysine- coated surfaces, but no improvement was obtained in growth of a line of SV-40 transformed WI-38 cells.
Journal ArticleDOI

Hormone secretion by cells dissociated from rat anterior pituitaries

TL;DR: The results demonstrate that function and morphologic integrity are preserved in this cell system, suitable for the study of various aspects of pituitary secretion and its control.
Journal ArticleDOI

The partial purification from calf serum of a fraction with multiplication-stimulating activity for chicken fibroblasts in cell culture and with non-suppressible insulin-like activity.

TL;DR: The partially purified multiplication‐stimulating activity stimulated DNA synthesis, mitosis, and growth of cultured chicken embryo fibroblasts and was shown to have non‐suppressible insulin‐like activity and to be an inhibitor of trypsin activity.
Journal ArticleDOI

Fibroblasts as an experimental tool in metabolic and hormone studies. II. Effects of insulin and nonsuppressible insulin-like activity (NSILA-S) on fibroblasts in culture.

TL;DR: Although a potent stimulator of all these metabolic indices NSILA‐S can only partially replace serum, it may be one of the growth factors present in serum but it does not seem to be the only one.

A protein growth factor for mammalian cells in culture.

TL;DR: Partially purified from bovine serum, the protein growth factor has several marked effects upon mammalian cells in culture: it causes adherence of cells to a glass surface, and only in its presence cells assume a flattened, epithelial-like appearance.
Journal ArticleDOI

Growth factors for mammalian cells in culture.

TL;DR: The purpose of this report is to describe the serum-free medium and to present the evidence for the growth-enhancing activity of some of its components.
Journal ArticleDOI

Studies on cellular adhesion in tissue culture. I. The effect of serum.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of serum on the adhesion of tissue cells to glass in culture, are described and the results are discussed in terms of cell-membrane structure and the composition of culture media.
Journal ArticleDOI

The serum α1-antitrypsin in families with hypo-α1-antitrypsinemia

TL;DR: The results agreed with those obtained in association with the determination of the total antitryptic activity of serum in members of families with hypo-α1-antitrypsinemia, and no overlapping occurred between normals, hetero- and homozygotes.
Journal Article

Antigenic specificities acquired from the growth medium by cells in tissue culture.

TL;DR: Evidence was obtained that specific antibodies to bound serum antigens can contribute to complement-dependent kill of the cells in vitro.
