The present work investigates the behaviour of geothermal energy piles in sand subjected to thermal loading and the resulting soil-structure interaction, numerically using the finite element software Abaqus and user-defined material subroutines for soil. The stress-strain response of sand has been simulated using CASM constitutive model based on critical-state soil mechanics. Detailed parametric sensitivity studies have been carried out to understand the effects of different end conditions of the pile, relative densities of the soil, coefficients of lateral earth pressure of the ground, lengths and diameters of the pile, thermal loads, coefficients of friction at the pile-soil interface, critical-state friction angles of soil, thermal conductivity of soil, specific heat of soil and thermal conductivity of the pile on the stress response of soil, deformation of the pile and soil, and strains in the pile. The results show that negative shear stress is generated in the soil at the pile-soil interface. In the...read more

Numerical modelling of energy piles in saturated sand subjected to thermo-mechanical loads
TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the impact of different magnitudes and combinations of thermal and axial mechanical loads on the mechanical behavior of energy piles in saturated sand, based on the results of a series of thermo-hydro-mechanical finite element analyses, which are compared with centrifuge data, and parametric numerical runs.

Undrained monotonic response of clean and silty sands
TL;DR: In this article, the authors apply the theoretical equations given by the principle of natural proportionality to the experimental datacontained in this paper and to gain additional experience on the common natural parameters corresponding to the un-drained monotonic response of clean and silty sands.

Thermomechanical Response of Geothermal Energy Pile Groups in Sand
Rajni Saggu,Tanusree Chakraborty +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the thermomechanical response of geothermal energy pile groups in sand was studied by using a three-dimensional nonlinear finite-element analysis procedure, where a raft was considered on the piles.

The stress-dilatancy relation for static equilibrium of an assembly of particles in contact
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors studied the relationship between the rate of dilatancy and the maximum stress ratio for any ideal packing and showed that the Mohr-Coulomb criterion of failure is strictly applicable to a continuum and does not have general application to a discontinuous assembly of particles.
