A broad class of up‐down methods used in psychoacoustics with due emphasis on the related problems of parameter estimation and the efficient placing of observations is described, including examples where conventional techniques are inapplicable.Abstract:
During the past decade a number of variations in the simple up‐down procedure have been used in psychoacoustic testing. A broad class of these methods is described with due emphasis on the related problems of parameter estimation and the efficient placing of observations. The advantages of up‐down methods are many, including simplicity, high efficiency, robustness, small‐sample reliability, and relative freedom from restrictive assumptions. Several applications of these procedures in psychoacoustics are described, including examples where conventional techniques are inapplicable.read more

Digit training in noise can improve cochlear implant users' speech understanding in noise.
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that auditory training in noise significantly improved cochlear implant (CI) users' speech performance in noise, and that training with simple stimuli using an easy closed-set listening task improved performance with difficult stimuli and a difficult open- set listening task.

On sense and senses: Intelligence and auditory information processing
TL;DR: In this paper, the frequency discrimination of two 20-msec tones in the absence of any masking using a two-interval forced choice procedure was investigated, and the results suggest that higher intelligence may be associated with greater resolution capacity, which in turn may increase speed of performance.

Alpha Oscillations in the Human Brain Implement Distractor Suppression Independent of Target Selection.
TL;DR: Electroencephalography recordings are used to test the preregistered hypothesis that alpha power directly relates to distractor suppression and thus operates independently from target selection, and demonstrate that the neurobiological foundation of attention implies a selection-independent alpha oscillatory mechanism to suppress distraction.

TL;DR: Two preliminary demonstrations of some of the kinds of questions that can be examined with the Lumosity dataset are presented, focusing on replicating known findings relating lifestyle factors to baseline cognitive performance at a much larger scale than has previously been available.

In cerebro unveiling unconscious mechanisms during reading
TL;DR: This article found evidence of a robust and staged link between the level of linguistic processing, the spatial distribution of brain activity and its information trafficking, and demonstrate that a gradual spatio-functional recruitment of reading areas is possible.

PEST: Efficient Estimates on Probability Functions

TL;DR: In this article, an adaptive procedure for rapid and efficient psychophysical testing is described, with maximally efficient trial-by-trial sequential decisions at each stimulus level, in a sequence which tends to converge on a selected target level.
