TLDR
For systems with negligible self-gravity, the bound follows from application of the second law of thermodynamics to a gedanken experiment involving a black hole as discussed by the authors, and it is shown that black holes have the maximum entropy for given mass and size which is allowed by quantum theory and general relativity.
Abstract
We present evidence for the existence of a universal upper bound of magnitude $\frac{2\ensuremath{\pi}R}{\ensuremath{\hbar}c}$ to the entropy-to-energy ratio $\frac{S}{E}$ of an arbitrary system of effective radius $R$. For systems with negligible self-gravity, the bound follows from application of the second law of thermodynamics to a gedanken experiment involving a black hole. Direct statistical arguments are also discussed. A microcanonical approach of Gibbons illustrates for simple systems (gravitating and not) the reason behind the bound, and the connection of $R$ with the longest dimension of the system. A more general approach establishes the bound for a relativistic field system contained in a cavity of arbitrary shape, or in a closed universe. Black holes also comply with the bound; in fact they actually attain it. Thus, as long suspected, black holes have the maximum entropy for given mass and size which is allowed by quantum theory and general relativity.

Quantum information measures and their applications in quantum field theory

TL;DR: In this paper, a wide variety of phenomena in quantum field theory can be characterised using quantum information measures, such as the entanglement entropy of a state and the relative entropy between quantum states in the same Hilbert space.

Entropy bounds and nonlinear electrodynamics

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors reanalyze the steps that lead to this entropy bound considering a charged object in conformity to Born-Infeld electrodynamics and show that the bound depends of the underlying theory used to describe the physical system.

Two arguments for more fundamental building blocks

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present two lines of reasoning, leading to elementary constituents more fundamental than the ones we know, which elevates analogs from mere curiosities, to reliable tests of fundamental theories.

Thermodynamics and phase transitions of black holes in contact with a gravitating heat bath.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors studied the thermodynamics of a shell of self-gravitating radiation bounded by two spherical surfaces and showed that the inclusion of appropriate entropy terms to the spacetime boundaries (including the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy for black hole horizons) leads to a consistent thermodynamic description.

Introduction to quantum information theory and outline of two applications to physics: the black hole information paradox and the renormalization group information flow

TL;DR: The c-theorem proves the existence, under certain conditions, of a function which is monotonically decreasing along the group transformations, and suggests an interpretation of this function as entropy, and its use to study the information flow along the RG transformations.
