TLDR
Despite well-documented health and socioeconomic disparities among AI/AN, ESRD-D incidence rates among this population have decreased substantially since 1996, and these approaches might be a useful model for diabetes management in other health care systems, especially those serving populations at high risk.

Diabetic Kidney Disease: Challenges, Progress, and Possibilities

TL;DR: Widespread innovation is urgently needed to improve health outcomes for patients with diabetic kidney disease, and characterization of new biomarkers, designing clinical trials that evaluate clinically pertinent end points, and development of therapeutic agents targeting kidney-specific disease mechanisms are needed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Global trends in diabetes complications: a review of current evidence

TL;DR: Data from population-based studies on trends in diabetes complications are synthesised, characterising recent and long-term trends and describing regional variation in the excess risk of complications, where possible, with the objectives of identifying and prioritising gaps for future surveillance and study.
Journal ArticleDOI

Prevalence of diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema in a primary care-based teleophthalmology program for American Indians and Alaskan Natives.

TL;DR: Prevalence of DR in this cohort was approximately half that in previous reports for AI/AN, and prevalence of DME was less than that reported in non-AI/AN populations.

Premature mortality projections in the USA through 2030: a modelling study.

TL;DR: This study aims to project premature mortality trends through 2030, and to estimate the total number of projected deaths, the projected number of potential years of life lost due to premature mortality, and the effect of reducing projected accidental death rates by 2% per year.

Global trend of diabetes mortality attributed to vascular complications, 2000–2016

TL;DR: Diabetic vascular complication-related deaths had increased substantially during 2000–2016, mainly driven by the increased mortality of renal complications.

Permutation tests for joinpoint regression with applications to cancer rates

TL;DR: A joinpoint regression model is applied to describe continuous changes in the recent trend and the grid-search method is used to fit the regression function with unknown joinpoints assuming constant variance and uncorrelated errors.

Effects of a fixed combination of perindopril and indapamide on macrovascular and microvascular outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (the ADVANCE trial): a randomised controlled trial

TL;DR: Routine administration of a fixed combination of perindopril and indapamide to patients with type 2 diabetes was well tolerated and reduced the risks of major vascular events, including death, which suggest that over 5 years, one death due to any cause would be averted.

A Framework for Public Health Action: The Health Impact Pyramid

TL;DR: A 5-tier pyramid best describes the impact of different types of public health interventions and provides a framework to improve health and implements interventions at each of the levels to achieve the maximum possible sustained public health benefit.
