TLDR
A synthesis of the discussions and ideas that were generated during the workshop on "Stated preference surveys and experimental design" at the 2014 Travel Survey Methods Conference in Leura (Australia) is presented in this article.
Abstract
This paper is a synthesis of the discussions and ideas that were generated during the workshop on “Stated preference surveys and experimental design” at the 2014 Travel Survey Methods Conference in Leura (Australia). The workshop addressed the challenges related to the design and implementation of stated preference surveys as a way to capture richer behavioural information on the preferences of individuals and groups. The discussion began by reviewing the current state of stated preference surveys and whether and what we have been doing correctly. We then analysed the areas where improvements are still needed, how we can achieve them, and some pros and cons of each improvement.

Transfer penalties in multimodal public transport networks

TL;DR: A framework is developed and applied to estimate the value perceived and assigned by commuters to the pure transfer penalty, which captures the effects of habit, crowding, walking, waiting and in-vehicle times, information, and the additional effect of intermodality on transfers.

Virtual Immersive Reality for Stated Preference Travel Behaviour Experiments: A Case Study of Autonomous Vehicles on Urban Roads

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present Virtual Immersive Reality Environment (VIRE) that is capable of developing highly realistic, immersive, and interactive choice scenario for pedestrian preferences related to autonomous vehicles and associated infrastructure changes on urban streets of Montreal.
Journal ArticleDOI

Virtual Immersive Reality for Stated Preference Travel Behaviour Experiments: A Case study of Autonomous Vehicles on Urban Roads

TL;DR: The use of VIRE is demonstrated in researching pedestrian preferences related to autonomous vehicles and associated infrastructure changes on urban streets in Montréal, Canada and it is shown that VIRE results in respondents having better understanding of the scenario and it yields more consistent results.

Consumer preferences for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in Japan

TL;DR: In this paper, the preferences of Japanese consumers for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (HFCVs) through a stated preference discrete choice experiment involving carefully chosen vehicle attributes and incentives were examined.
Journal ArticleDOI

How flexible is flexible? Accounting for the effect of rescheduling possibilities in choice of departure time for work trips

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the effect of constraints in work and in other daily trips/activities on the willingness to shift departure time and willingness to pay for reducing travel time and travel delay.

Stated Choice Methods

TL;DR: In this article, the authors focus on stated preference (SP) methods, placing decision makers in controlled experiments that yield hypothetical choices, rather than revealed preferences (RP) - actual choices in the market.

Joint mixed logit models of stated and revealed preferences for alternative-fuel vehicles

TL;DR: The authors compare multinomial logit and mixed logit models for data on California households' revealed and stated preferences for automobiles, and show large heterogeneity in respondents' preferences for alternative-fuel vehicles.

Determining the Appropriate Response to Evidence of Public Concern: The Case of Food Safety:

TL;DR: With social issues again close to the top of the research agenda for marketers, policy makers are increasingly likely to be presented public opinion research findings that suggest the public is verifiable as discussed by the authors.

Assessing the influence of design dimensions on stated choice experiment estimates

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explored the complexity and cognitive burden associated with stated choice experiments and found that all five design dimensions affect the choice variance, or put it another way, they affect choice consistency.

Hypothetical bias, choice experiments and willingness to pay

TL;DR: This article reviewed the efforts to identify and calibrate WTP derived from one or more methods that involve assessment of hypothetical settings, be they contingent valuation methods, choice experiments involving trading attributes between multiple alternatives, with or without referencing, or methods involving salient or non-salient incentives linked to actual behaviour.
