The proposed method can be used as a building block for more elaborated navigation strategies which allow the robot to systematically clean rooms with a complex workspace shape.

Through extensive experiments carried out with a modified iRobot Roomba vacuum cleaning robot and in simulation we demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach.
The robot can climb stairs using this method even if the stairs are steep, and the sizes of the riser and the tread of the stairs are unknown.
The assembled robot prototype can climb three different sizes of stairs around 1 step per second, which is generally as fast as human walking.
And the inter-floor localization can help the robot safely move to other floors by recognizing the stairs and change the coordinate system.
We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in extensive experiments carried out both in simulation and with a real vacuum cleaning robot, also in comparison to previous approaches.
We finally confirm the effectiveness of our proposed method with a successful experiment of going up stairs by this robot.
As the result, we realize the fast going up and down stairs by this robot successfully and confirm the effectiveness of our proposed method.
