TL;DR: A tie-down stake for anchoring small aircraft or other objects to the ground in any soil conditions and which consists of a central hub with an eyelet and arms which extend away from the hub is described in this paper.
Abstract: A tie down stake for anchoring small aircraft or other objects to the ground in any soil conditions and which consists of a central hub with an eyelet and arms which extend away from the hub. At the opposite end of each arm consist of holes that serve as stake guides for directing a plurality of anchoring rods at a fixed angle downward and inward into the ground. Thus joined by the arms and hub, the anchoring rods cooperate together to form a secure earth anchor. Also disclosed is a rod extraction tool.

TL;DR: In this article, an analytical expression for the effective twist angle and the Freedericksz threshold voltage is derived for twisted chiral nematic layers in cells with bistabilities, when weak anchoring in the tilt and twist angle of the director is assumed.
Abstract: Analytical and numerical calculations of threshold behavior and electro‐optical characteristics in twisted chiral nematic layers are presented, when weak anchoring in the tilt and twist angle of the director is assumed. An analytical expression for the effective twist angle and the Freedericksz threshold voltage is derived. In cells with bistabilities, we investigate the influence of the anchoring parameters and device parameters on the width of the hysteresis. Using the 4×4‐matrix formalism of Berreman [J. Opt. Soc. Am. 62, 502 (1972)], we demonstrate the influence of the weak anchoring on the transmission‐versus‐voltage characteristic.

Abstract: An earth anchor that can be driven into the ground to a desired anchoring depth and which has a tie rod extending therefrom for connection to an above-the-ground structure to be supported. The anchor is in the form of a stamped plate having a substantially flat co-planar body portion with a tapered ground entry end and with planing wings formed at a trailing end which are angled out of the plane of the body portion for guiding the anchor plate into a substantially horizontal anchoring position upon tensioning of the tie rod. The anchor plate is formed with a stepped drive rod receiving notch in the trailing end which is engageable by the head of the drive rod and which maintains the anchor plate in coaxial relation to the drive rod as it is being driven into the ground.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose an approach to position and anchor easily secure fastening points for immobilizing any loads on a suitable structure, such as a rail, which can be fixed at any point on the rail.
Abstract: The device makes it possible to position and to anchor easily secure fastening points for immobilising any loads on a suitable structure. A rail (11) of special shape receives the anchoring points, according to the appended figure, which can be fixed at any point whatsoever on the rail. Eccentric cams (6) which can easily be operated by means of levers (7) make it possible to immobilise an anchoring point, by pinching the rail (11) between the head of the screw (2) and the base (1) of the anchoring point. Suitable machinings prevent the anchoring point from slipping on the rail, even under the effect of significant urging. The device is intended, in particular, for immobilising loads transported on platforms of lorries or trucks (wagons).

TL;DR: In this article, the anisotropic part of the interfacial free energy at the interface between the nematic liquid crystal 4n-pentyl-4′-cyanobiphenyl and an obliquely evaporated SiO substrate was measured by using a reflectometric method.
Abstract: The functional form of the azimuthal anchoring energy, i.e. the anisotropic part of the interfacial free energy, at the interface between the nematic liquid crystal 4-n-pentyl-4′-cyanobiphenyl and an obliquely evaporated SiO substrate is measured for the first time by using a reflectometric method. The anchoring energy function is obtained by measuring the director rotation on the interface caused by an external magnetic field ranging from 0 to 2·3 T. The dependence of the anchoring energy on the director azimuthal angle is found to be well fitted by the function W a(ϕ) = W asin2 ϕ in agreement with the predictions of the Berreman model for the anchoring at a grooved interface.

TL;DR: In this article, the behavior of the periodic stripes is presented and discussed as a function of the anchoring energies and of the ratio of nematic bulk elastic constants, in the frame of the usual continuum theory.
Abstract: A usual aperiodic hybrid alignment can appear in a nematic layer with weak anchoring only if the cell thickness is greater than a critical value dh, below which a static periodic pattern instead of the hybrid aperiodic structure could be preferred, if the energy cost for a three dimensional deformation, involving twist, is less than the cost for the two-dimensional deformation of splay-bend type. We have studied the occurrence of the mechanical instability leading to the static periodic splay-stripes, i. e. in the case of the tilt anchoring stronger at the one of the walls, in which the anchoring is planar, for several values of the twist anchoring strengths. Here the behavior of the threshold d for the periodic stripes is presented and discussed as a function of the anchoring energies and of the ratio of nematic bulk elastic constants, in the frame of the usual continuum theory

TL;DR: In this paper, a spatial variation of the nematic scalar order parameter leads to a surface anchoring energy renormalization, which is a consequence of torque conservation and of the "macroscopic" definition of the surface orientation.
Abstract: A spatial variation of the nematic scalar order parameter leads to a surface anchoring energy renormalization. This renormalization is a consequence of torque conservation and of the ‘‘macroscopic’’ definition of the surface orientation. The order change comes from an assumed property of the boundary or from an external curvature constraint inducing surface melting. In both cases, the maximum effect leads to a surface extrapolation length comparable with the nematic‐isotropic coherence length. Strong anchoring data should be remeasured and reinterpretated.

TL;DR: In this paper, a multi-directional anchoring mechanism was proposed for a material handling apparatus, which consists of counter-rotating shafts whose lower ends comprise left and right-hand helical augers.
Abstract: A material handling apparatus comprises a chassis, an anchoring mechanism retained in the chassis and a material handling mechanism secured to the chassis. The anchoring mechanism provides multi-directional anchoring of the chassis onto a penetrable surface upon which the apparatus rests. The anchoring mechanism comprises a pair of counter-rotating shafts whose lower ends comprise left and right-hand helical augers, respectfully. The upper ends of the shafts are drivingly connected to a means of rotation. The material handling mechanism pulls, pushes or lifts the material being handled. The anchoring mechanism is so retained in the chassis to react the operating forces of the material handling apparatus. Use of this multi-directional anchoring mechanism obviates the requirement for massive, traction based devices, which presently perform large material handling tasks.

TL;DR: In this paper, the thermodynamic potential as a function of the anchoring direction is expanded in a Fourier series reflecting the symmetry of the solid substrate and it is shown that both the well known adsorption-induced and the strain-induced anchoring transitions can be interpreted in terms of the same generic anchoring diagram in Fourier space.
Abstract: The orienting action of a mica surface on nematic liquid crystals is studied using a polarizing microscope. The experiments show that anchoring transitions can be induced by mechanical strain of the crystal surface. Characteristics patterns of phase boundaries are observed close to genuine or artificial inclusions on the mica surface where shear strains have all possible directions and a large range of amplitudes. In order to describe the observations, the thermodynamic potential as a function of the anchoring direction is expanded in a Fourier series reflecting the symmetry of the solid substrate. It is shown that both the well known adsorption-induced and the strain-induced anchoring transitions can be interpreted in terms of the same generic anchoring diagram in Fourier space.

TL;DR: In this paper, the influence of the spatial variation of the scalar order parameter on the anchoring energy is analyzed and it is shown that if the nematic average orientation is forced to change too rapidly, a surface melting is expected.
Abstract: The influence of the spatial variation of the scalar order parameter on the anchoring energy is analysed. It is shown that if the nematic average orientation is forced to change too rapidly, a surface melting is expected. Furthermore, by considering two typical situations in which the surface scalar parameter is different or equal to the bulk one, the renormalization of the anchoring energy is estimated.
