TL;DR: In this article, the Star-CCM+ solver was used to complete mixing-plane, harmonic balance, and transient, full annulus simulations of a coupled diffuser-fan system to determine coupling effects between the serpentine diffuser and transonic fan stage.
Abstract: Distorted inflow conditions have been a plague for compression system operability and aeromechanics since the dawn of gas turbine engines. This will likely continue to be an issue for all systems, but modern inlet designs, particularly serpentine diffusers, accentuate the existing issues through the production of both total pressure deficits and flow angularity distortion. For the first time, unsteady, full annulus CFD analysis of a coupled diffuser-fan system was pursued to determine coupling effects between the serpentine diffuser and transonic fan stage. Additionally, the harmonic balance method was used for the first time to demonstrate development and transfer of the distortion. These efforts provided a novel demonstration of 3-D analysis using a generated distortion relevant to this class of inlet and engine. Prior distortion analyses have been conducted using prescribed inlet distortion fields typically matching experimental total pressure or bulk swirl profiles. In the present study, an offset serpentine diffuser was used, coupled directly with the fan stage, to generate the distortion pattern. The Star-CCM+ solver was used to complete mixing-plane, harmonic balance, and transient, full annulus simulations of the coupled system. Mixing plane analysis provided a computationally inexpensive way to assess a nominal mass flow rate at which the components were matched, but provided little additional information beyond a flow field initialization for the higher-fidelity methods. The ability of any distortion analysis method to compute the generation of total temperature and swirl distortion through the fan stage is critical. The harmonic balance and full annulus results show appropriate capture of the distortion transfer, generation of intra-stage total temperature distortion, as well as the impact of the turbomachinery upon the incoming flow field. Redistribution of the distorted flow entering the fan was captured reasonably well by the harmonic balance simulation. Entering the rotor region, however, the vortices

TL;DR: In this article, the effect of pipe diffusers on the performance of a highly loaded centrifugal compressor by varying pipe diffuser inlet-to-impeller exit radius ratio, throat length, divergence angle, and throat area was investigated using a state-of-the-art multi-block flow solver.
Abstract: Pipe diffusers with several different geometries were designed for a highly loaded centrifugal compressor originally using a wedge diffuser. Parametric studies on the effect of pipe diffuser performance of a highly loaded centrifugal compressor by varying pipe diffuser inlet-to-impeller exit radius ratio, throat length, divergence angle, and throat area on centrifugal compressor performance were performed using a state-of-the-art multi-block flow solver. An optimum design of pipe diffuser was obtained from the parametric study, and the numerical results indicate that this pipe diffuser has remarkable advantageous effects on the compressor performance. Furthermore, a detailed comparison of flow visualization between the pipe diffuser and the wedge diffuser was conducted to identify the physical mechanism that account for the beneficial effects of the pipe diffuser on the performance and stability of the compressor. It was found that the performance enhancement afforded by the pipe diffuser is a result of the unique diffuse inlet flow pattern. Alleviating flow distortion in the diffuser inlet and reducing the possibility of a flow separation in discrete passages are the physical mechanisms responsible for improving the highly loaded centrifugal compressor performance.

TL;DR: In this paper, a supercritical dissolved gas cavitation device is used for reducing sludge in urban sewage sludge treatment. But the authors focus on the reduction of sludge and do not consider the degradation-resistant organic matters in sludge.
Abstract: The utility model relates to a supercritical dissolved gas cavitation device for strengthening reduction of sludge, belonging to the technical field of urban sewage sludge treatment. When sludge flows through a contracting nozzle at a high speed, air is injected from an air suction tube to be mixed with sludge in a dissolved gas cavitation cavity, sequentially enters into a first diffuser and a secondary diffuser and then is sprayed into an oxidization reaction kettle from a cavitation nozzle, and finally, sludge subjected to dissolved gas cavitation is discharged from a sludge output pipe. The supercritical dissolved gas cavitation device can operate in combination with a biochemical reaction basin, a reflux and surplus sludge pool or a sludge homogenizing pool. As a target vortex cavitation generator is combined with the oxidization reaction kettle, conditions of supercritical wet oxidization reaction are achieved, so that degradation-resistant organic matters in the sludge can be directly decomposed to CO2, H2O and the like, and macromolecular chains of the degradation-resistant organic matters are broken to small molecular chains and the degradation-resistant organic matters are further oxidized to obtain fatty acids; therefore, the ratio of BOD/COD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand/Chemical Oxygen Demand) is improved, beneficial conditions for subsequent biochemical reactions are created, and the sludge is reduced. When the supercritical dissolved gas cavitation device and the method thereof are used by a sewage plant, the sludge output is reduced by 60%-70%.

Abstract: The effect of concentrator-diffuser (C-D) of a shrouded wind turbine was studied. The main objective involved assessing the increment that this device induces in productivity of small wind turbines. Also the aerodynamic performance of two scaled blade models were studied in terms of drag and lift forces as a function of angle of attack for Re of 15714 and 37143. Wind turbine power performance was evaluated in terms of power coefficient values. Laboratory measurements showed that improvements were obtained on the electrical power values, resulting in an average increase of 90% in the corresponding power coefficient values. A more pronounced enhancement is described at lower wind speed values. CFD calculations were performed at flow values of 6 and 14 m/s to the C-D device. CFD calculations performed an evaluation of velocity experienced in the action rotor zone, which provided maximum increases of 81 % and 86 %, respectively. Numerical simulations and experimental measurements were performed also to the blades, where the results obtained were similar, providing a difference of 25 % for drag forces.

TL;DR: In this article, a case study for a seminar room, in which light pipes are installed, is presented, where temperatures for the solar tube (dome and diffuser), window and room were monitored continuously for 24 h periods.
Abstract: Tubular light pipes (i.e., solar tubes) are modern daylighting devices, which are designed to let confined interior spaces benefit from natural lighting. In tropical country, the use of sunlight for lighting is a major concern due to the heat associated with sunlight, which has the potential to increase the cost of cooling, thereby reducing the energy savings from the reduction in lighting load. To investigate the thermal and lighting performance of light pipes, a case study for a seminar room, in which light pipes are installed, is presented. Temperatures for the solar tube (dome and diffuser), window and room were monitored continuously for 24 h periods. Results from the study indicate that the diffuser was on average 6.68 °C higher than room temperature on a clear day between 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., while dome temperature was on average 4.45 °C higher than diffuser's temperature during the same period. This large thermal gradient in the day between dome, diffuser and room can significantly increase the cost of maintaining thermal comfort of 25 °C, in the room. Another finding was the phenomenon of light pipes acting as a heat pumping the night, because it extracts heat from the room during the night between 7:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. This occurred because dome temperature is always smaller than diffuser and room temperature in the night. Therefore, for energy savings to be realized from light pipes, thermal performance must be taken into consideration in the analysis of energy savings from light pipes.
