TL;DR: In this article, a comprehensive overview on joining battery cells by resistance spot, ultrasonic and laser beam welding is presented, and a quantitative analysis on welded test samples reveals the ultimate tensile strength and heat input into a battery cell.
Abstract: In large battery assemblies, which are integrated, for example, in electric vehicles or stationary storage systems, up to several thousand single battery cells are connected together. Every single cell connection influences the functionality and efficiency of the whole battery system. Resistance spot, ultrasonic or laser beam welding are mostly used for connecting battery cells in the production of large battery assemblies. Each of these welding techniques has its own characteristics depending on the material properties and contact geometry. Cell casing and terminal dimensions may constrain possible contact geometries. For example, pouch cells provide detached tabs, whereas cells with hard casing provide a certain area of the casing for electrical connection. Consequently, it is a challenging task to find the most suitable welding technique and welding parameters for each individual battery assembly. This paper presents a comprehensive overview on joining battery cells by resistance spot, ultrasonic and laser beam welding. The specific features, advantages and dependencies of each welding technique for connecting cells are discussed. In addition, a quantitative analysis on welded test samples reveals the ultimate tensile strength and heat input into a battery cell. A novel measuring and calculation method was designed and applied to assess the electrical contact resistance itself. The electrical contact resistance occurs as a result of the joint and not in the bulk material. Therefore, it is a criterion which may be transferred to any size of joint partners.

TL;DR: The case of electrically connecting screen-printed with crocodile clips is considered and the use of edge-connectors demonstrating the precise connection of an electrode setup when utilising crocodile clip can result in extremely reproducible electrochemical outputs when applied correctly is compared.
Abstract: In this technical note the often overlooked issue of electrically connecting screen-printed electrode sensors is considered. The electrical connection of screen-printed electrodes to the potentiostat/electronics can be a main issue when a true electrochemical response is trying to be obtained and if one does not have a stable electrical connection, the results that are obtained may lack reproducibility and therefore maybe discredited as “another failed electrochemical probe/analyte”. This paper considers the case of electrically connecting screen-printed with crocodile clips and compares that to the use of edge-connectors demonstrating the precise connection of an electrode setup when utilising crocodile clips can result in extremely reproducible electrochemical outputs when applied correctly.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a method of determining the state of a rebar without electrical contact and demonstrated that it is the low frequency impedance of rebar in concrete that correlates to corrosion state but these are normally time consuming vulnerable to noise.
Abstract: Hundreds of thousands of concrete bridges and hundreds of billions of tons of concrete require characterization with time for corrosion. Accordingly, protocols for rapid testing and improved field characterization systems that automatically triangulate electrical resistivity and half-cell corrosion potential measurements would be beneficial allowing discrete/periodic mapping of a structure to be performed as well as addressing testing for asphalt covered concrete. Further, it is the low frequency impedance of rebar in concrete that correlates to corrosion state but these are normally time consuming vulnerable to noise. Hence, it would be beneficial to provide a means of making low frequency electrical resistivity measurements rapidly. Further, prior art techniques for electrical rebar measurements require electrical connection be made to the rebar which increases measurement complexity/disruption/repair/cost even when no corrosion is identified. Beneficially a method of determining the state of a rebar without electrical contact is taught.

TL;DR: An electrical interconnection system comprises a bifurcated, multilayer flex circuit having electrode pads on the inner surfaces of the bifurecation as discussed by the authors, where the electrodes are aligned with respective contacts on a printed circuit board.
Abstract: An electrical interconnection system comprises a bifurcated, multilayer flex circuit having electrode pads on the inner surfaces of the bifurcation. Electronic components are mounted on one or both sides of the flex circuit by conventional means. When the bifurcation is spread apart, the electrode pads are alignable with respective contacts on a printed circuit board. After bonding the pads to the contacts by soldering, conductive adhesive, or other means, a secure electrical connection is maintained while still allowing the flex circuit to bend somewhat from side to side, creating additional design options not available with rigidly mounted components and modules.

TL;DR: In this paper, the impedance between a pair of the electrical contacts can be detected and the device operated based on the detected impedance, and a wearable device can detect an electrocardiogram or other biopotentials using electrical contacts if detected impedance falls below a specified threshold.
Abstract: Wearable devices are provided including electrical contacts to detect voltages or other biosignals when mounted to the skin of a wearer. The impedance between a pair of the electrical contacts can be detected and the device operated based on the detected impedance. The device can detect an electrocardiogram or other biopotentials using the electrical contacts if the detected impedance falls below a specified threshold. The device could indicate that the detected impedance is below the specified threshold, e.g., such that a wearer could contact one of the electrical contacts with a finger to allow detection of an electrocardiogram between the arms of the wearer. The device could indicate that the detected impedance remains greater than the specified threshold, e.g., such that a wearer could re-mount the wearable device to improve the electrical connection between the electrical contacts and the wearer's skin.

TL;DR: In this paper, a contactless electroluminescence (EL) imaging technique is proposed, which provides an EL image without the need for electrical connection to drive current through the module.
Abstract: Module performance can be characterized by imaging using baseline and periodic images to track defects and degradation. Both thermal images, which can be acquired during sunny operating conditions, and photoluminescence images, which could be acquired at night, can be collected without electrical connection. Electroluminescence (EL) images, which are useful to detect many types of defects such as cracks, interconnect and solder faults, and resistances, have typically required electrical connection to drive current in the cells and modules. Here, a contactless EL imaging technique is proposed, which provides an EL image without the need for electrical connection to drive current through the module. Such EL imaging has the capability to be collected at night without disruption to daytime power generation.
