TL;DR: In this article, a surface bidirectional reflectance distribution function (SBDF) is proposed to model the absorption and reflectance properties of each surface on the object, which is used to calculate the solar radiation pressure.
Abstract: High-fidelity orbit propagation requires detailed knowledge of the solar radiation pressure on a space object. The solar radiation pressure depends not only on the space object’s shape and attitude, but also on the absorption and reflectance properties of each surface on the object. These properties are typically modeled in a simplistic fashion, but are here described by a surface bidirectional reflectance distribution function. Several analytic bidirectional reflectance distribution function models exist, and are typically complicated functions of illumination angle and material properties represented by parameters within the model. In general, the resulting calculation of the solar radiation pressure would require a time-consuming numerical integration. This might be impractical if multiple solar radiation pressure calculations are required for a variety of material properties in real time; for example, in a filter where the particular surface parameters are being estimated. This paper develops a method...

TL;DR: In this article, an ordered array of aluminum nanopyramids, behaving as a phased array of optical antennae, is demonstrated to strongly modifies light absorption in thin layers of dye molecules.
Abstract: We demonstrate that an ordered array of aluminum nanopyramids, behaving as a phased array of optical antennae, strongly modifies light absorption in thin layers of dye molecules. Photoluminescence measurements as a function of the illumination angle are performed using a time-reversed Fourier microscope. This technique enables a variable-angle plane-wave illumination of nanostructures in a microscope-based setup. Our measurements reveal an enhancement of the light conversion in certain directions of illumination, which indicate the efficient diffractive coupling between the free space radiation and the surface plasmons. Numerical simulations confirm that surface modes supported by the periodic array enhance the intensity of the pump field in the space between particles, where the dye molecules are located, yielding a directional plasmonicmediated enhancement of the optical absorption. This combined experimental and numerical characterization of the angular dependence of light absorption in nanostructures can be beneficial for the design and optimization of devices in which the harvesting of light plays a major role.

Abstract: A flexible illumination system for Talbot lithography is presented, in which the Talbot mask is illuminated by discrete but variable incidence angles. Changing the illumination angle stepwise in combination with different exposure doses for different angles offers the possibility to generate periodic continuous surface relief structures. To demonstrate the capability of this approach, two exemplary micro-optical structures were manufactured. The first example is a blazed grating with a stepsize of 1.5 μm. The second element is a specific beam splitter with parabolic-shaped grating grooves. The quality of the manufacturing process is evaluated on the basis of the optical performance of the resulting micro-optical elements.

TL;DR: In this paper, the essential components of the luminosity of skin coated with powder foundation are identified based on two processes: reflection measurement and visual evaluation of the skin surface, which refers to the state of being "luminous", "brilliant", or "radiant" of the foundation-coated skin.
Abstract: This article aims to identify the essential components of the luminosity of skin coated with powder foundation, based on two processes: reflection measurement and visual evaluation of the skin surface. The luminosity refers to the state of being “luminous,” “brilliant,” or “radiant” of the foundation-coated skin. First, a flat piece of artificial skin is used, and an experimental device is developed to visually evaluate the appearance of the foundation-coated artificial skin at different conditions of viewing angle, illumination angle, and illumination intensity. The luminosity score is analyzed from the point of view of optical reflection. Next, the same assessment of luminosity is executed for real human skin. The luminosity is evaluated for cheek and forehead coated with powder foundation at different observation conditions using another experimental device. Finally, all luminosity scores are analyzed in color spaces to identify the color region relating to luminosity perception. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Col Res Appl, 39, 45–55, 2014

TL;DR: In this paper, an improved absolute Dirichlet SVD (AD-SVD) algorithm was proposed to achieve illumination invariant image alignment, which achieved 1/20 pixels accuracy for image alignment and was nearly entirely invariant to daily and seasonal solar position variation.
Abstract: . This paper aims at image matching under significantly different illumination conditions, especially illumination angle changes, without prior knowledge of lighting conditions. We investigated the illumination impact on Phase Correlation (PC) matrix by mathematical derivation and from which, we decomposed PC matrix as the multiplication product of the illumination impact matrix and the translation matrix. Thus the robustness to illumination variation of the widely used Absolute Dirichlet Curve-fitting (AD-CF) algorithm for pixel-wise disparity estimation is proved. Further, an improved PC matching algorithm is proposed: Absolute Dirichlet SVD (AD-SVD), to achieve illumination invariant image alignment. Experiments of matching DEM simulated terrain shading images under very different illumination angles demonstrated that AD-SVD achieved 1/20 pixels accuracy for image alignment and it is nearly entirely invariant to daily and seasonal solar position variation. The AD-CF algorithm was tested for generating disparity map from multi-illumination angle stereo pairs and the results demonstrated high fidelity to the original DEM and the Normalised Correlation Coefficient (NCC) between the two is 0.96.

Abstract: An imaging catoptric optical unit has at least four mirror, which image an object field in an object plane into an image field in an image plane. A first chief ray plane of the optical unit is prescribed by propagation of a chief ray of a central object field point during the reflection at one of the mirrors. A second chief ray plane of the optical unit is prescribed by propagation of the chief ray of the central object field point during the reflection at one of the other mirrors. The two chief ray planes include an angle that differs from 0. In an alternative or additional aspect, the imaging optical unit, considered via the image field, has a maximum diattenuation of 10% or a diattenuation that prefers a tangential polarization of the imaging light for a respectively considered illumination angle. The result of both aspects is an imaging optical unit in which bothersome polarization influences are reduced during the reflection of imaging light at the mirrors of the imaging optical unit.

TL;DR: The problem of finding the minimum angle α ϵ such that one can install at each point of F a stationary rotating floodlight with illumination angle α in such a way that, at all times, every target point of P is illuminated by at least one floodlight is shown to be NP-hard and hard to approximate.
Abstract: Let P and F be sets of n ≥ 2 and m ≥ 2 points in a plane, respectively. We study the problem of finding the minimum angle α ϵ [2Π/m, 2Π] such that one can install at each point of F a stationary rotating floodlight with illumination angle α, initially oriented in a suitable direction, in such a way that, at all times, every target point of P is illuminated by at least one floodlight. All floodlights rotate clockwise at unit speed. We provide bounds for the case in which the elements of P ⋃ F are on a given line, and present exact results for the case in the plane in which we have two floodlights and many target points. We further consider the non-rotating version of the problem and look for the minimum angle α such that one can install a non-rotating floodlight with illumination angle α at each point of F, in such a way that every target point of P is illuminated by at least one floodlight. We show that this problem is NP-hard and hard to approximate.

TL;DR: An image enhancement method for utilizing polarization information in many such situations where the light source is not fixed and a method for extracting scene features based on a calculation of the reflection model including polarization effects is proposed.
Abstract: Information about the polarization of light is valuable because it contains information about the light source illuminating an object, the illumination angle, and the object material. However, polarization information strongly depends on the direction of the light source, and it is difficult to use a polarization image with various recognition algorithms outdoors because the angle of the sun varies. We propose an image enhancement method for utilizing polarization information in many such situations where the light source is not fixed. We take two approaches to overcome this problem. First, we compute an image that is the combination of a polarization image and the corresponding brightness image. Because of the angle of the light source, the polarization contains no information about some scenes. Therefore, it is difficult to use only polarization information in any scene for applications such as object detection. However, if we use a combination of a polarization image and a brightness image, the brightness image can complement the lack of scene information. The second approach is finding features that depend less on the direction of the light source. We propose a method for extracting scene features based on a calculation of the reflection model including polarization effects. A polarization camera that has micro-polarizers on each pixel of the image sensor was built and used for capturing images. We discuss examples that demonstrate the improved visibility of objects by applying our proposed method to, e.g., the visibility of lane markers on wet roads.

TL;DR: In this article, an indoor LED lamp with adjustable illumination angle and intensity is presented, where the LED chips are uniformly distributed on the outer surface of the LED base plate and axially arranged in a chip group, and a partition plate outwards radiating and extending is arranged between the two adjacent chip groups.
Abstract: The utility model discloses an indoor LED (Light-Emitting Diode) lamp with an adjustable illumination angle and intensity. The indoor LED lamp comprises an LED power supply, an LED base plate and LED chips arranged on the LED base plate, wherein the LED power supply is electrically connected with the LED chips; the LED base plate is shaped like a hollow cylinder; the LED chips are uniformly distributed on the outer surface of the LED base plate; the LED chips axially arranged are in a chip group; a partition plate outwards radiating and extending is arranged between the two adjacent chip groups; and the tail end of each partition plate is connected with a light deflector plate. The indoor LED lamp disclosed by the utility model has the beneficial effect that most light emitted by the LED chips reaches an illumination area after being refracted by the light deflector plate, and a small part of the light is refracted or transmitted to the surroundings, so that the whole space has weak light, thereby not only keeping high efficiency of an illumination system, but also effectively reducing glaring, improving visual effect and realizing energy conservation and environment protection of a light source for household illumination.
