TL;DR: The purpose of this study was to ablate a corticolimbic pathway suggested by known corticocortical projectionsi0 to attempt to produce neglect.
Abstract: H Neglect, extinction to bilateral simultaneous stimulation, hemispatial agnosia, and inattention are similar phenomena that result from several different lesions. Most neurologists consider neglect to be evidence of a parietal lobe lesion.'.' Neglect has been seen in patients with nondominant dorsolateral and medial frontal lobe disease.\" Trimodal neglect (tactile, auditory and visual) has been produced in macaques by subpial removal of the inferior parietal lobule and both banks of the caudal portion of the superior temporal SUICUS.'.~ The tactile component of this triad has been descr ibed after par ie ta l lobe ablations in monkeys.\": Neglect in monkeys has also been seen after frontal lobe A recent theory suggests that neglect is an attentional deficit caused by corticolimbicreticular activating disconnection..' The purpose of this study was to ablate a corticolimbic pathway suggested by known corticocortical projectionsi0 to attempt to produce neglect.

TL;DR: In this article, three potential social policies are analyzed in detail: national health screening, education in child rearing, and the development of profiles of abusing families with the hope of offering them preventive help.
Abstract: Both the print and electronic media recently have highlighted the problems faced by severely abased and neglected children in America. Many suggestions have been offered for ameliorating the conditions leading to child abuse and neglect, but few hard data exist to tell us which social policies can be most effective in combatting these conditions. In this article, several sources of data are examined to estimate the incidence of abuse, its social and demographic features, and the nature of available child abuse case reports. Three potential social policies are analyzed in detail: national health screening, education in child rearing, and the development of profiles of abusing families with the hope of offering them preventive help. Each analysis has two underlying themes. First, even with incomplete data it is often possible to evaluate the probable effectiveness of a social policy before it is implemented. Second, data initially collected in a non-experimental setting ran still be used to suggest improvem...

TL;DR: It is most important for all of mandated sources under the present child abuse law–especially the physician in the hospital–to be able to recognize situations in which abuse or neglect may exist, as the law clearly states that cases of suspicion must also be reported.
Abstract: The maltreatment of children is a disease affecting the child and the parents. It is difficult to accept the fact that in our society today inhuman cruelty to children appears to be rapidly increasing. The perpetrators of these crimes are, for the most part, not strangers but the parents themselves. In 1968, in New York City, there were 956 cases of abuse reported. In 1969, there were 1,600 and in 1970, the incidence rose to approximately 3,000 cases. The number of neglected children during this time has been noted to be approximately 35,000. Within the period 1966 to 1970, there has been a total percent increase of 549 in reported cases of child abuse to New York9s Central Registry. It is most important for all of mandated sources under the present child abuse law–especially the physician in the hospital–to be able to recognize situations in which abuse or neglect may exist. It is not necessary for a physician to be absolutely sure about any abuse or neglect, as the law clearly states that cases of suspicion must also be reported. This disease, if not properly managed, leads to critical consequences. It is estimated that one out of every two battered children dies after being returned to his parents. Many of these battered children, if they survive amid approach adolescence, begin to show signs of pyschological and emotional disturbances reported as irreversible in most cases. There has been expressed concern that the probable future tendency of abused children is to become the future battering Parent or the hard-core criminal responsible for crimes and violence in our society.

TL;DR: A nine-month-old baby was admitted to hospital following attacks by his father, who had choked, then injured by prolonged banging against furniture; finally, he had been picked up by one leg and thrown across the room.
Abstract: A family pedigree is described in which representatives from at least three generations were subjected to severe ill-usage as children. This family pedigree is representative of a number of others in the locality which are also under study. Many members of this kindred, and their husbands, wives and children, had received extensive social and medical help from numerous professional workers in many areas over long periods of time. To date, this help has not prevented the tendency to the perpetuation of child abuse and neglect in successive generations.

TL;DR: In this article, the neglect of environmental modification is traced through the literature, with particular emphasis on the lack of specifically delineated action principles and techniques, along with implications for practice.
Abstract: This paper highlights a significant gap in casework theory and practice-the lack of conceptualization of environmental modification. The neglect of environmental modification is traced through the literature, with particular emphasis on the lack of specifically delineated action principles and techniques. A definition of environmental modification is proposed, along with implications for practice.

TL;DR: In this article, an examination of the lists of indigent school children who attended private schools between 1811-1816, and who were reimbursed through the use of tax funds, reveals that no Negroes received public funds for their education.
Abstract: Negro Public Education in ^Antebellum Philadelphia y 1800-1860 THE MOVEMENT toward free, tax-supported education at the beginning of the nineteenth century began in urban America. Early public schools in most cities were pauper schools designed to educate poor white children. Philadelphia was no exception. However, according to the Pennsylvania school laws of 1802, 1809, 1812 and 1818, that established these schools, the Negro was legally entitled to receive tax-supported, free education. But, as Philadelphian John Jay Smith pointed out to Alexis de Tocqueville in 1831, \"The law with us is nothing if it is not supported by public opinion. Slavery is abolished in Pennsylvania but . . . the people are imbued with the greatest prejudice against Negroes, and the magistrates don't feel strong enough to enforce the laws favorable to them.\" School officials suffered from this same uncertainty. Although legally entitled to free schooling, Negroes suffered discriminatory practices before the first public school was built. An examination of the lists of indigent school children who attended private schools between 1811-1816, and who were reimbursed through the use of tax funds, reveals that no Negroes received public funds for their education. Arthur Donaldson, a Quaker teacher in a Negro private school, attacked this practice in 1813, but he was unsuccessful in his attempt to gain public support for the alleviation of the Negro's

TL;DR: In this article, the Austrian Military Frontiers have once again aroused the interest of historians based on the assumption that, because of the new interest, the reader will be familiar with the frontiers' basic organizational features.
Abstract: After a long period of neglect, the Austrian Military Frontiers have once again aroused the interest of historians. This article is based on the assumption that, because of the new interest, the reader will be familiar with the frontiers' basic organizational features. Presumably it is well known that the inhabitants of the border area between the Austrian and Turkish empires were subject to military conscription and that because of their unique role their living conditions were better than those of the Hungarian serfs.
