TL;DR: A feed-forward control scheme based on iterative learning control to accurately achieve the stroke movement of the paddle as determined by using three input-output maps implemented by means of locally weighted regression.
Abstract: We propose a method of controlling a table tennis robot so as to return the incoming ball to a desired point on the table with specified flight duration. The proposed method consists of the following three input-output maps implemented by means of locally weighted regression: 1) a map for predicting the impact time of the ball hit by the paddle and the ball position and velocity at that moment according to input vectors describing the state of the incoming ball; 2) a map representing a change in ball velocities before and after impact; and 3) a map giving the relation between the ball velocity just after impact and the landing point and time of the returned ball. We also propose a feed-forward control scheme based on iterative learning control to accurately achieve the stroke movement of the paddle as determined by using these maps. Experimental results including rallies with a human opponent are also reported to demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach.

TL;DR: In this article, a floating, water current-driven electrical power generation system has a hull supporting one or more paddle wheels, which is tethered in a stream or river so that the moving water turns the paddle wheel coupled to an electrical generator.
Abstract: A floating, water current-driven electrical power generation system has a hull supporting one or more paddle wheels. The unit is tethered in a stream or river so that the moving water turns the paddle wheel coupled to an electrical generator. A transmission matches stream flow conditions to the electrical generator. Stabilizing fins on the hull bottom help keep the hull properly aligned in the stream's current. Built-in leg structures are sized to prevent bottoming of the paddle wheel during periods of low water in the stream or river. Mounts are provided for an outboard motor useful for propelling the unit to a desired location. Larger versions of the system may be equipped with a boat mooring facility allowing a boat to propel the unit to a desired position in a stream or river.

TL;DR: It is shown that a major source of the agitation in a paddle cell is vortices shed from the paddle, which results in a mass-transfer limit that is periodic in nature and that may exhibit spatial variations related to the paddle wake.
Abstract: Mass-transfer properties of a continuously reciprocating paddle reactor are investigated using computational fluid dynamic simulations. The flow induced by the paddle motion is modeled with a moving mesh assuming laminar flow. Spatial and temporal mass-transfer data are gathered over many paddle cycles under diffusion-limited conditions. Transient, numerical simulations of this type are computationally expensive, but can add insight into flow phenomena that are difficult to observe experimentally. It is shown that a major source of the agitation in a paddle cell is vortices shed from the paddle. This results in a mass-transfer limit that is periodic in nature and that may exhibit spatial variations related to the paddle wake. A simulation-based, mass-transfer correlation is presented that relates various design and operating parameters within a generic paddle reactor. The mass-transfer trends predicted by the numerical simulations are compared with experimental mass-transfer correlations found in the literature.

TL;DR: In this article, a switch with a paddle that pivots about its upper end and is biased to assume the same at rest position when either in its on position or off position is presented.
Abstract: There is disclosed structure which overcomes the deficiencies with respect to prior art devices by providing a wiring device such as a switch having a paddle that pivots about its upper end and is biased to assume the same at rest position when either in its on position or off position. Repeated pressing and releasing the lower portion of the face of the switch paddle alternately closes and opens a set of contacts within the switch to alternately connect and disconnect a load form a source of electricity each time the paddle is pressed. Thus, regardless of whether adjacent switches are on-off switches or 3-way switches, they will always be in alignment. An on-off indicator such as a small light is provided to indicate to a user when the contacts of the switch are opened or closed. The paddle of the switch has a length-width ratio dimension that is proportioned to provide a finger contact surface of increased area to allow a user to more easily and quickly identify and operate a particular switch. The vertical axis of the switch has a surface of positive first differential, comprised of splines drawn between points of varying distance from a datum plane, and has along the horizontal axis a surface of a positive first differential and negative second differential, comprised of a combination of splines drawn between points of varying distance from the datum plane.

TL;DR: Through modifications to the original haptic paddle design, a "snaptic paddle" has been created that allows two modular one-degree-of-freedom devices to be connected to form a single two- degrees of freedom device that operates like a traditional joystick.
Abstract: The haptic paddle was developed previously as an inexpensive haptic device for educational use, and has been applied to course topics such as dynamic systems and introductory controls. However, it has only a single degree of freedom, limiting it to very simple modeling and simulation exercises. Through modifications to the original haptic paddle design, a "snaptic paddle" has been created that allows two modular one-degree-of-freedom devices to be connected to form a single two-degree-of-freedom device that operates like a traditional joystick. The devices can also be used separately, creating a flexible, economical haptic interface for educational applications. The device successfully provides force feedback interaction, as will be shown in a demonstration at the World Haptics Conference.

TL;DR: In this paper, the diameter of the fermenter is increased with the absolute amount in heavy solids in the biogenic wastes, and the torque required for setting the agitator moving after a period of standstill increase, too.
Abstract: The dimensions of fermenters used in the fermentation of biogenic wastes for the purpose of producing biogas keep increasing together with the absolute amount in heavy solids in the biogenic wastes (9). As a result, the sediments on the bottom of the fermenter tank and the torque required for setting the agitator moving after a period of standstill increase, too. In order to solve this problem, the shaft (10) extending longitudinally through the fermenter is provided at the ends of the agitator arms (12) with paddles (13). These paddles (13), in the one direction of rotation convey matter, and in the other direction of rotation plough the matter. For this purpose, two shares (15) are disposed at an acute angle to each other and are formed onto the end of an H-beam (20). A scraper sheet (19) is welded to the lower end of the two shares (15). The paddle area is delimited by a paddle sheet (18). The front edge (16) of the two shares can be reinforced by a V-shaped profile.

Abstract: The utility model discloses a whole immersion creeper type movable paddle board propeller for a ship which is arranged in the depressed space at the bottom of the ship hull, and the utility model is composed of a carrier wheel, a wheel shaft, a chain, a movable paddle board, a roller, a grooved track and a sealing element. The movable paddle board is vertically hinged with the chain through the auricle on the side, both sides of the opposite sides are additionally mounted the trunnions, which are sleeved with the two rollers, and the two rollers are respectively inserted into the corresponding and self-sealing grooved track, so the auxiliary mechanism of the cam is formed, and the changeable inclination angle motion of the movable paddle board can be decided. The planes of the two grooved tracks are paralleled to the rotary plane of the carrier wheel. The shape of the movable paddle board and the chain-driving mechanism of the utility model are simple; the propeller for the long-distance ship can be easily carried out, and the radial dimension is small. The movable paddle boards are serially arranged in the same horizontal line, and the numbers of the movable paddle board for thrashing can be optionally increased. The utility model can not only increase the pushing force, but also the beam of the ship hull needs not to be enlarged, and the utility model is especially adapted to be provided and used for the ships which are operated on the narrow water channel.
