TL;DR: In this article, a UV-C source and an air mover are combined in a single fixture which uses a low intensity UV-c source and a paddle ceiling fan to significantly increase the mixing of the treated with the untreated room air.
Abstract: A ceiling paddle fan fixture for improving the quality of the air in the room and various methods of enhancing room air quality, with particular application in public spaces such as hospitals, health care institutions, dormitories, schools and offices. A UV-C source and an air mover are combined in a single fixture which uses a low intensity UV-C source and a paddle ceiling fan to significantly increase the mixing of the treated with the untreated room air. Sterilization of room air is achieved by the passage of a high volume of air at a relatively slow speed through a relatively low intensity UV-C field.

TL;DR: An automated ultrasound imaging‐mammography system wherein a digital mammography unit has been augmented with a motorized ultrasound transducer carriage above a special compression paddle to increase coverage and stabilize the compressed breast is developed.
Abstract: Objective. We are developing an automated ultrasound imaging-mammography system wherein a digital mammography unit has been augmented with a motorized ultrasound transducer carriage above a special compression paddle. Challenges of this system are acquiring complete coverage of the breast and minimizing motion. We assessed these problems and investigated methods to increase coverage and stabilize the compressed breast. Methods. Visual tracings of the breast-to-paddle contact area and breast periphery were made for 10 patients to estimate coverage area. Various motion artifacts were evaluated in 6 patients. Nine materials were tested for coupling the paddle to the breast. Fourteen substances were tested for coupling the transducer to the paddle in lateral-to-medial and medial-to-lateral views and filling the gap between the peripheral breast and paddle. In-house image registration software was used to register adjacent ultrasound sweeps. Results. The average breast contact area was 56%. The average percentage of the peripheral air gap filled with ultrasound gel was 61%. Shallow patient breathing proved equivalent to breath holding, whereas speech and sudden breathing caused unacceptable artifacts. An adhesive spray that preserves image quality was found to be best for coupling the breast to the paddle and minimizing motion. A highly viscous ultrasound gel proved most effective for coupling the transducer to the paddle for lateral-to-medial and medial-to-lateral views and for edge fill-in. Conclusions. The challenges of automated ultrasound scanning in a multimodality breast imaging system have been addressed by developing methods to fill in peripheral gaps, minimize patient motion, and register and reconstruct multisweep ultrasound image volumes.

TL;DR: TPX paddles <2.5 mm were the most ideal for ultrasound and mammogram imaging requirements and, after accounting for signal loss through the paddle, appearance of cysts was comparable to images obtained from handheld, direct contact sweeps.
Abstract: We are developing a combined digital mammography/3D ultrasound system to improve detection and/or characterization of breast lesions. Ultrasound scanning through a mammographic paddle could significantly reduce signal level, degrade beam focusing and create reverberations. Thus, appropriate paddle choice is essential for accurate sonographic lesion detection and assessment with this system. In this study, we characterized ultrasound image quality through paddles of varying materials (lexan, polyurethane, TPX, mylar) and thicknesses (0.25 to 2.5 mm). Analytical experiments focused on lexan and TPX, which preliminary results demonstrated were most competitive. Spatial and contrast resolution, side-lobe and range lobe levels, contrast and signal strength were compared with no-paddle images. When the beamforming of the system was corrected to account for imaging through the paddle, the TPX 2.5 mm paddle performed the best. Test objects imaged through this paddle demonstrated ≤ 15% reduction in spatial resolution, ≤ 7.5 dB signal loss, ≤ 3 dB contrast loss and range lobe levels ≥ 35 dB below signal maximum over 4 cm. TL;DR: In this article, a model based on wind-over-waves coupling (WOWC) theory is used to simulate a laboratory experiment and to explain the observed peculiarities of the surface stress distribution above a combined wave field: wind-generated-plus-monochromatic-paddle waves.
Abstract: A model based on wind-over-waves coupling (WOWC) theory is used to simulate a laboratory experiment and to explain the observed peculiarities of the surface stress distribution above a combined wave field: wind-generated-plus-monochromatic-paddle waves. Observations show the systematic and significant decrease in the stress as the paddle wave is introduced into the pure wind-wave field. As the paddle-wave steepness is further increased, the stress level returns to the stress level characteristic of the pure wind waves. Further increase in the paddle-wave steepness augments the stress further. The WOWC model explains this peculiarity of the stress distribution by the fact that the paddle waves significantly damp the wind waves in the spectral peak. The stress supported by these dominant waves rapidly falls when the paddle wave is introduced, and this decrease is not compensated by the stress induced by the paddle wave. With further increase in the steepness of the paddle wave, the stress supported by dominant wind waves stays at a low level while the stress supported by the paddle waves continues to grow proportional to the square of the steepness, finally exceeding the stress level characteristic of the pure wind-wave field.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a method for moving toner within an image forming device using a paddle with an inlet leading into a reservoir through a first sidewall, where the paddle is positioned within the reservoir such that rotation of the paddle moves the toner from the inlet throughout the reservoir.
Abstract: The present application is directed to devices for moving toner within an image forming device. In one embodiment, the device includes a reservoir with an inlet that leads into the reservoir through a first sidewall. New toner may be introduced through the inlet and into the reservoir. A paddle may be positioned within the reservoir to move the toner from the inlet and through the reservoir. The paddle may prevent the toner from accumulating at the inlet which may act as a block to prevent further toner from being moved into the reservoir. The paddle may include a shaft with a weighted first arm extending from the shaft in a first direction and a second arm extending from the shaft in a second direction. The arms are weighted such that the first arm is heavier than the second arm. The paddle is positioned within the reservoir such that rotation of the paddle moves the toner from the inlet throughout the reservoir.

TL;DR: A motion capture system and feedback mechanism can be integrated into a virtual ping- pong game to create a multi-player platform and during an exhibition many people positively responded to it.
Abstract: In this paper we show how a motion capture system and feedback mechanism can be integrated into a virtual ping- pong game to create a multi-player platform. To trace the motion of each player, optical markers are attached to different places on each player's paddle. For tactile feedback, we designed a controller for a DC (Direct Current) motor, which is also attached to the paddle. This controller communicates with the game server through wireless Bluetooth technology. When the game server detects a collision between the paddle and ball, the controller receives the message from the game server and then triggers one of the respective paddle's DC motors to vibrate depending on the position of the impact on the paddle. During an exhibition many people positively responded to the game.

Abstract: This paper presents the results of modeling a shear-mode MR damper. The prototype damper consists of two steel parallel plates and in the middle, there is a paddle covered by foam saturated with MR fluid. The force is produced when the paddle is in motion and the magnetic field generated by a coil in one end of the device reaches the fluid. Several response forces were captured at different displacement excitations and magnetic field levels. The goal is to find a relationship between the velocity, the control voltage (inputs of the system) and the force generated by the device. The results of predicting the force using the Bingham, Bouc-Wen and Hyperbolic Tangent based models are compared and the suitability of these models is discussed.
