TL;DR: In this article, the performance of a constant output, biomass-fired, Stirling engine-based CCHP system is analyzed by examining the primary energy consumption and operational cost compared with a reference case.
Abstract: SUMMARY When wood chips are available and used to fuel a combined cooling, heating, and power (CCHP) waste heat recovery system, they can represent an economically viable source of biomass energy that can meet a facility's electric and thermal demands. Using a Stirling engine as the CCHP prime mover provides several important advantages over conventional internal combustion engines including no additional processing of the waste wood chips, a potentially higher thermal efficiency, flexibility of fuel sources, and low maintenance. This study shows how the operational characteristics of a constant output, biomass-fired, Stirling engine-based CCHP system are affected by the performance of the individual components, including the prime mover, heat recovery system, auxiliary boiler, absorption chiller, and heating coil unit The results are assessed by examining the primary energy consumption and operational cost compared with a reference case. The analysis provides insight on the prime mover sizing and selection of each component to properly implement the system. In addition to examining the effects of each component, the effect of excess electricity production and buyback are considered. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

TL;DR: In this article, the performance analysis of a microturbine generation (MTG) system in grid connected and islanding modes of operation is presented, which includes individual components of prime mover like, compressor, heat exchanger, burner and turbine.
Abstract: Distributed generation (DG) has drawn a great attention in distribution network due to reduction in transmission loss, load sharing property and improving the power quality. Among the different source of DG, the microturbine generation (MTG) system has a good record of improving the system stability, reliability and power quality. This paper presents modeling and performance analysis of MTG system in grid connected and islanding modes of operation. The model developed in this work includes the individual components of prime mover like, compressor, heat exchanger, burner and turbine. The model of MTG system consists of microturbine, permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) and power electronics interfacing circuit for generation and conversation from AC/DC/AC respectively. The MTG system uses a DC link voltage to control the microturbine output power by fuel and air flow control methodology. The DC link power is delivered to the load through a voltage source inverter (VSI) with pulse width modulation (PWM) technique. The model of MTG system has been implemented using Matlab/Simulink environment and its simulation result shows the load following performance of MTG system for various loads.

TL;DR: In this article, a new off-design performance adaptation approach with the use of a novel compressor map generation method and GA optimization is presented, where a set of coefficients controlling a generic compressor performance map analytically is used in the optimization process for the adaptation of the gas turbine performance model.
Abstract: Accurate gas turbine performance simulation is a vital aid to the operational and maintenance strategy of thermal plants having gas turbines as their prime mover. Prediction of the part load performance of a gas turbine depends on the quality of the engine’s component maps. Taking into consideration that compressor maps are proprietary information of the manufacturers, several methods have been developed to encounter the above limitation by scaling and adapting component maps. This part of the paper presents a new off-design performance adaptation approach with the use of a novel compressor map generation method and Genetic Algorithms (GA) optimization. A set of coefficients controlling a generic compressor performance map analytically is used in the optimization process for the adaptation of the gas turbine performance model to match available engine test data. The developed method has been tested with off-design performance simulations and applied to a GE LM2500+ aeroderivative gas turbine operating in Manx Electricity Authority’s combined cycle power plant in the Isle of Man. It has been also compared with an earlier off-design performance adaptation approach, and shown some advantages in the performance adaptation.Copyright © 2012 by ASME

Abstract: This paper models and solves the operation management problem of MicroGrids (MGs) including cost and emissions minimization under uncertain environment The proposed model emphasizes on fuel cells (FCs) as a prime mover of combined heat and power (CHP) systems An electro-chemical model of the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is used and linked to the daily operating cost and emissions of the MGs A reformer is considered to produce hydrogen for PEMFCs Moreover, in high thermal load intervals, in order to make the MG more efficient, a part of produced hydrogen is stored in a hydrogen tank The stored hydrogen can be reused by PEMFCs to generate electricity or be sold to other hydrogen consumers A probabilistic optimization algorithm is devised which consists of 2m + 1 point estimate method to handle the uncertainty in input random variables (IRVs) and a multi-objective Self-adaptive Bee Swarm Optimization (SBSO) algorithm to minimize the cost and emissions simultaneously Several techniques are proposed in the SBSO algorithm to make it a powerful black-box optimization tool The efficiency of the proposed approach is verified on a typical grid-connected MG with several distributed energy sources

TL;DR: A dc motor driven by a four-quadrant dc drive is used as a prime mover to replicate the torque input from a wind turbine's drive shaft to investigate the low voltage fault behavior of a DFIG wind turbine generator.
Abstract: This paper has described a laboratory-scale DFIG test facility commissioned to investigate the low voltage fault behavior of a DFIG wind turbine generator. In this DFIG test facility, a dc motor driven by a four-quadrant dc drive is used as a prime mover to replicate the torque input from a wind turbine's drive shaft. A mechanical model created in Simulink is executed by the dSpace controller. The IGBT power converter and dc-link capacitors are over-rated to withstand various grid faults. The fault emulator permits a flexible approach to the application of grid faults and also provides an opportunity to mimic the typical grid connection impedance of a wind turbine.

Abstract: A power system housed in one or more modules or containers may be located as a unitary structure where desired, for example secured to a locomotive platform, allowing easy retrofits. A control subsystem may maintain an RPM of a prime mover at minimum that still provides an expected level of power from an electric machine for any one of a finite number of throttle settings. The control subsystem may dynamically adjust loads between various combinations of series and/or parallel couplings. A set of processor executable instructions may be configured for specific platforms by selecting appropriate set of values based on number of loads (e.g., driven axles), rating (e.g., horse power), other criteria (e.g., manufacturer, model, year). Characteristics may be determined and verified, and operation based on the outcome of such. A telematics system method logs and provides remote access to operational data, engine data, power system data, anti-idling overrides, unauthorized changes, and/or location.
