TL;DR: In this article, the fatty acid composition, tocopherols and β-carotene content in the following vegetable oils: rapeseed, olive, arachide, sunflower, soybean, corn, grapeseed, pumpkin seed, sesame and linseed were evaluated.
Abstract: The fatty acid composition, tocopherols and β-carotene content in the following vegetable oils: rapeseed, olive, arachide, sunflower, soybean, corn, grapeseed, pumpkin seed, sesame and linseed were evaluated. The study comprised commercial refined and cold pressed oils from different manufacturers. The fatty acid composition was determined by Gas Chromatography (GC) method on a 50m capillary column with a CP Sil 88 phase. α-, β-, γ-, δ-tocopherols and β-carotene contents were analyzed by HPLC method with a Lichrospher Si 60 column. The study showed that β-carotene was present only in some cold pressed oils. The amount of tocopherols varied much between oil types and between the same type of oil from different producers. Among all tested oils, sunflower oil had the highest vitamin E content. The rapeseed oil, the most popular on Polish market was characterized by the highest content of α-linolenic acid and the lowest 18:2/18:3 ratio. The α-tocopherol equivalent to polyenoic content ratio was the highest in olive oil and the lowest in commercial linseed oil. Only 1.6% of linolenic acid in the total fatty acid composition was observed in the linseed oil.

TL;DR: The results indicate the PSFs potential as a fiber source and its ability to increase the fecal weight and volume promoting a laxative effect.
Abstract: This study has the aim to evaluate the physiological effects of the Pumpkin Seed Flour (PSF) on the intestinal tract of newly weaned male Wistar rats fed on diets containing whole Sifted and Residual - PSF for ten days. The experimental diets were prepared substituting 30% of the total content of starch and dextrin of the control diet for the corresponding PSF. The control and the experimental diets were chemically characterized. The animals were divided into four groups in order to evaluate growth, ingestion, feces, and cecal pH. The PSFs and the experimental diets presented high contents of alimentary fibers, proteins, and lipids. Similar ingestions of diets containing whole Sifted and Residual - PSF resulted in body weight gain. Rats on diets containing PSFs showed higher feces volume and weight (p > 0.05) in addition to an expressive insoluble fiber excretion, especially in the Residual - PSF group. Only the Residual PSF presented a significant reduction (p < 0.05) in the cecal pH. These results indicate the PSFs potential as a fiber source and its ability to increase the fecal weight and volume promoting a laxative effect.

TL;DR: The genetic and optimisation of the growth conditions study of fifteen Pleurotus species and strains from Belgian Coordinated Collections of Microrganisms and Mycotheque de l’ Universite Catholique de Louvain (Agro) Industrial Fungi and Yeasts Collection was carried out, identifying strains with potential for cultivation in the tropics.
Abstract: A comprehensive genetic and optimisation of the growth conditions study of fifteen Pleurotus species and strains from Belgian Coordinated Collections of Microrganisms/ Mycotheque de l’ Universite Catholique de Louvain (Agro) Industrial Fungi and Yeasts Collection was carried out. The optimal environmental conditions for the Pleurotus strains were determined by establishing variability in growth response and primordium development on agar media over a range of growth parameters: osmotic potential (− 0.5 MPa to − 5.0 MPa), temperature (5 to 40 °C) and pH (2 to 12). The maximum growth rates and the optimum conditions for growth varied for the different strains. A Pleurotus ostreatus strain able to grow and fruit at elevated temperatures (25 °C) was identified that has potential for cultivation in the tropics. Nine strains were identified with high growth rates. Primordia were produced at low pH (4 to 6), at suboptimal growth temperatures (£ 25 °C), and under moderate water stress (−0.5 to −3.5 MPa). An investigation into the effect of micro-solute concentration changes on the growth response of the Pleurotus species was carried out on agar media using microconcentrations of polyethylene glycol (PEG) 6000, potassium chloride (KCl) and sodium chloride (NaCl). The solutes at micro-concentrations ranging from 0.35 g l-1 to 1.00 g l-1 for PEG 6000, 1.50 g l-1 to 3.85 g l-1 for KCl and 0.60 g l-1 to 1.54 g l-1 for NaCl produced a two to three fold increase in the growth rate of the Pleurotus strains, which has potential application in oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus species) spawn production and cultivation. The optimum micro concentrations of combined KCl and NaCl solutes of 2.70 g l-1 KCl: 1.08 g l-1 NaCl or 3.85 g l-1 KCl: 1.54 g l-1 NaCl at 20 °C; and 1.50 g l-1 KCl: 0.60 g l-1 NaCl or 2.70 g l- 1 KCl: 1.08 g l-1 NaCl for both 25 °C and 30 °C; of PEG 6000 of 0.90 g l-1 (20 °C) and 0.65 g l-1 (25 and 30 °C) were identified. Development of alternative spawn substrate protocols was done by varying the boiling, soaking periods for the substrates (maize [Zea mays] grain, maize cobs, pumpkin seeds [Cucurbita sp.] and bean seeds [Phaseolus vulgaris]). Maize grain, pumpkin seeds and maize cobs with a water content of 35 to 39 %, 41 to 47 % and 64 % respectively have potential use as alternative substrates to wheat (Triticum aestivum) grain in Pleurotus species spawn production. The feasibility of creating novel media formulations for culturing Pleurotus strains was investigated by developing various whole wheat grain and crushed wheat grain mixtures. The novel media formulations of 1:3 (w/v) to 1:5 (whole wheat grain: distilled water) and 1:3 to 1:15 (crushed wheat grain: distilled water) were determined to be optimal for use as low-cost alternative media for culturing Pleurotus species for spawn production and cultivation purposes. An investigation in the use of Tyndallisation as a means of sterilising the growth media for spawn production was carried out by modifying primarily the boiling times and number of days of incubation. Tyndallisation of 30 minutes boiling daily for three days (wide-mouthed bottles) and 5 minutes boiling for four days (narrowmouthed bottles) were optimal for production of Pleurotus species spawn. Alternative single substrates and substrate mixtures (1:1) were determined by growth and basidiome production on thatch grass (Agropyron sp.), banana fronds (Musa sapientum), wheat straw, sage (Coleochloa setifera); banana + sage, banana + grass, banana + wheat straw and sage + grass. Grass and sage were the best substrates singly and in combination with banana. Biological efficiencies greater than 140 % were obtained. Positive and negative synergistic effects on primordium development dependant on the strain and substrate mixture were noted. Genetic variability of Pleurotus species and strains was investigated by sequencing the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of ribosomal DNA. The 15 Pleurotus strains separated into four clusters. The internal transcribed spacer sequences analysis suggested that strain 31674 was misidentified as P. sajor-caju instead of P. ostreatus. The value of noting the history of the strain in phylogenetic analysis was proposed. This study recommends BCCM/MUCL strain 31017 (P. sajor-caju) for spawn production and cultivation processes due to having the characteristics of high growth rate, high biological efficiency, prolific primordial formation and moderate xerotolerance which are highly desirable for spawn production and cultivation processes.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors show that the pumpkin seeds softened by chemical maceration improve sensory preferences compared to non-macerated products, and they can be converted to a new product as a snack rich in fiber and other important compounds, normally discarded as industrial solid waste.
Abstract: The nutritional value of pumpkin seeds is widely recognized. This article shows that alkaline maceration of pumpkin seed makes them soft and improves their market acceptability as an important source of fiber, unsaturated lipids, minerals and proteins. Microscopic characterization of pumpkin seeds was realized. The results indicate elimination of minerals from the seeds through the delignification process due to the nature of the phenolic compounds eliminated in the maceration liquid. The alkaline maceration process of pumpkin seeds may contribute to a larger consumption of fibers and other nutritive elements from them. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS This work shows that the pumpkin seeds softened by chemical maceration improve sensory preferences, compared to nonmacerated products. Solid waste from pumpkin process can be converted to a new product as a snack rich in fiber and other important compounds, normally discarded as an industrial solid waste.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors focused on the nutritional and functional properties of defatted hibiscus, jojoba and pumpkin seeds flours, to determine proximate chemical composition, such as crude protein, ether extract, ash, crude fiber, amino acids and carbohydrate content.
Abstract: The, present study was carried out to maximizing the available and valuable sources of proteins of the agriculture plant`s waste and industry duties . So this research focusing on the nutritional and functional properties of defatted hibiscus, jojoba and pumpkin seeds flour. Analysis were carried out on defatted seeds, to determine proximate chemical composition , such as crude protein , ether extract, ash, crude fiber, amino acids and carbohydrate content. The latter was calculated by difference. Protein content ranged of 23.4, 28.0 and 53.5 % of dry mater base (DM) of jojoba seeds flour (JF), hibiscus seeds flour (HF), and pumpkin seeds flours (PF) respectively. In addition, fat content ranged from 13.9 % to 33.8 % of HF and PF, respectively, while the highest fat content 54.9% obtained from JF. Antinutritional compounds, such as phytates detected in all flours, ranged from 0.23 to 0.5 g/100g DM. Functional properties of all flours were assessed, such as water absorption index (WAI), water soluble index(WSI), acid number (pH), foam capacity (FC) and foam stability (FS). All flours were excellent in their functional properties except FC and FS of PF was inferior good. Amino acids compositions of these flours were also determined. The protein of these flour had abundant amount of total essential amino acids and higher than recommended by FAO/ WHO (1973). This research classified the amino acids of all seeds flour into groups to identify the flour potential for food supplementation in bakery and meat processed formulation. The nutritional value of the protein and its quality methods based on in vitro (chemical) and animal bioassays in vivo for assessment of protein quality have been developed by predicting protein quality depending on the determination of amino acids and calculated chemical scores, essential amino acid index (EAAI), amino acid / essential amino acids ( A/E ) ratio, amino acids score (AAS), estimated biological (BV) and calculated protein efficiency ratio ( PER ). An in vivo of protein quality depending on biological assessment using rats which depending on true digestibility percentage (TD), BV and net protein utilization (NPU) were investigated. By comparison, between their chemical estimation and bioassay, it's clearly view that, both of HF and PF had good quality protein; as expressed by their high TD, BV and NPU when compared to poorly JF. Both of these flours were significantly a quite similar to standard protein of casein. Meanwhile, jojoba flour had a considerable amount of antinutritional factors of simmondsin, which act as satiety inducers and impede bioavailability of protein. All of these nutritional values of the different flours HF and PF concluded those have an excellent protein and nourished sources. These flours could be potentially added to food system, such as bakery products, complementary foods and meat products, moreover JF have been promising not only their nutritive value but also for their responsibility to diminish satiety and reducing food intake for dietetic persons.
