TL;DR: In this paper, the authors showed that the oil content of pumpkin seeds was remarkably high (45%), and the fatty acid profile of the oil showed that is composed primarily of linoleic, oleic, palmitic and stearic acids.
Abstract: In recent years, the acceptance of fatty acid methyl esters (biodiesel) as a substitute to petroleum diesel has rapidly grown in Greece. The raw materials for biodiesel production in this country mainly include traditional seed oils (cotton seed oil, sunflower oil, soybean oil and rapeseed oil) and used frying oils. In the search for new low-cost alternative feedstocks for biodiesel production, this study emphasizes the evaluation of pumpkin seed oil. The experimental results showed that the oil content of pumpkin seeds was remarkably high (45%). The fatty acid profile of the oil showed that is composed primarily of linoleic, oleic, palmitic and stearic acids. The oil was chemically converted via an alkaline transesterification reaction with methanol to methyl esters, with a yield nearly 97.5 wt%. All of the measured properties of the produced biodiesel met the current quality requirements according to EN 14214. Although this study showed that pumpkin oil could be a promising feedstock for biodiesel production within the EU, it is rather difficult for this production to be achieved on a large scale.

TL;DR: The results showed a dose dependent increase in sexual arousability, copulatory efficiency, and improved sexual sensation and coupulatory efficiency for the rats treated with M. whitei and E. capensis, aloe and pumpkin seeds showing an increase insexual performance in terms of intromissions and ejaculatory latency.
Abstract: The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of formulations composed of Mondia whitei, Ekebergia capansis, aloe tincture (Aloe exelsa) and pumpkin seed (Cucurbita pepo) on sexual behaviour of inexperienced male rats. Male rats were treated orally with ethanol extracts of M. whitei and E. capensis, aloe tincture (from aloe juice) and pumpkin seed powder. The sexual behaviour of the rats treated with extracts was compared with those treated with 100 µg of testosterone as the positive control and those receiving normal rat feed as negative control. The receptivity of the females was rendered homogeneous with daily dose of estadiol benzoate. The sexual behaviour of the rats were observed over one ejaculatory phase for five consecutive days. The results showed a dose dependent increase in sexual arousability (decreased mounting latency), copulatory efficiency (decreased intercoupulatory interval) and improved sexual sensation (increased in neuromotor activity) for the rats treated with M. whitei and E. capensis, aloe and pumpkin seeds showing an increase in sexual performance in terms of intromissions and ejaculatory latency which also improved sexual sensation and coupulatory efficiency. The formulations of plants under investigation showed significant aphrodisiac properties.

TL;DR: It was suggested that pumpkin seed protein isolate could protect the liver cells from CCl -induced liver damages perhaps, by its antioxidative effect on hepatocytes, hence eliminating the deleterious effects of toxic metabolites from C Cl.
Abstract: The aim of the present study is to prepare pumpkin seed protein isolate (PSPI) by alkaline extraction and to study the effect of its substitution for casein on body weight, feed efficiency ratio, serum liver function enzymes, serum lipids profile and antioxidant enzymes in carbon tetrachloride (CCl ) intoxicated rats. Forty two 4 male rats were divided into 6 equal groups. One group of rats was fed on basal diet and kept as a negative control while the others were subcutaneously injected by CCl twice at a dose of 1 ml /kg body weight for 4 induction of acute liver toxicity. The first group of the intoxicated rats was left as a positive control while the others were fed on experimental diets in which casein was replaced with PSPI at 25, 50, 75 and 100% instead of casein. At the end of experimental period (4 weeks), the rats were sacrificed and blood samples were collected for biochemical analyses. Livers of the sacrificed rats were removed and prepared for histopathological examination. Results showed that substitution of PSPI for casein especially at 75 and 100% in CCl -intoxicated 4 rats increased their feed intake and body weight gain. This substitution also decreased the levels of serum liver function enzymes, improved lipid profile and increased the activity levels of antioxidant enzymes in CCl - 4 intoxicated rats. Histopathological examination revealed alleviation of hepatic lesions caused by CCl by 4 increasing the percentage of PSPI used. In conclusion, it was suggested that pumpkin seed protein isolate could protect the liver cells from CCl -induced liver damages perhaps, by its antioxidative effect on hepatocytes, 4 hence eliminating the deleterious effects of toxic metabolites from CCl . So the present study recommended that 4 the use of pumpkin seed protein isolate may be useful for patients suffering from liver diseases due to its hepatoprotective and hypolipidemic activities.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyzed fluted pumpkin (Telfairia occidentalis Hook, F.) leaves and seeds and okra (Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) 'Moench' leaves and pod/seeds) for their proximate compositions and mineral element contents to assess their nutritive and energy values.
Abstract: This study analyzed fluted pumpkin (Telfairia occidentalis Hook, F.) leaves and seeds and okra (Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) 'Moench' leaves and pod/seeds for their proximate compositions and mineral element contents to assess their nutritive and energy values. Results show relatively high mean moisture contents for fluted pumpkin leaves (86.29 ± 1.77%) and seeds (74.29 ± 1.58%) and okra leaves (78.53 ± 3.4%) and pod/seeds (82.9 ± 0.75%), indicating that the bulk of the vegetables constitutes water. Mean concentrations of crude protein (29.58 ± 10 and 21.81 ± 2.10%), crude fat (22.86 ± 1.33 and 17.22 ± 0.66%), ash 12.83 ± 0.55 and 9.00 ± 1.18%) and energy value (1609.68 and 1613.78KJ) were higher in fluted pumpkin seeds and okra pod/seeds than in their leaves. In contrast, nitrogen free extract and crude fibre contents were higher in the leaves than seeds and pod/seeds. Mineral contents (potassium (K), phosphorus (P), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) and vitamin C were relatively high, implying that both vegetables could be good supplements for these nutrients. However, only K, Fe and Mn could meet an RDA (Recommended Dietary Allowance) requirements.

TL;DR: This study localised the oil to the small lipid droplets in the cotyledon cells by Rhodamine 6G lipophilic stain and localised protochlorophyll to chlorenchyma by microscopic fluorimetry.
Abstract: Pumpkin seed oil has a distinct taste and a characteristic green-red colour. A green layer (chlorenchyma) can be observed in the cross section of the seed on the inner side of the testa. This layer is considered to be a source of protochlorophyll pigment that gives colour to the pumpkin seed oil. However, the histolocalisation of the pigment by selective method was not yet studied. In this study, we localised the oil to the small lipid droplets in the cotyledon cells by Rhodamine 6G lipophilic stain. Furthermore, we localised protochlorophyll to chlorenchyma by microscopic fluorimetry. Emission maximum of protochlorophyll was 700 nm when measured in the seed, but it shifted to 630 and 655 nm (two peaks) when measured in pumpkin seed oil or in the extract.

TL;DR: The effect of germination on the proximate composition of African yam bean and fluted pumpkin seeds is significantly lower than that of the germinated seeds, while their crude protein, total carbohydrate, ash and total metabolizable energy content was higher.
Abstract: The effect of germination on the proximate composition of African yam bean (Sphenostylis stenocarpa) and fluted pumpkin (Telferia occidentalis) was investigated. The moisture and total lipid content of the ungerminated African yam bean seeds is significantly lower (p<0.05) than that of the germinated seeds, while their crude protein, total carbohydrate, ash and total metabolizable energy content was higher. The ungerminated fluted pumpkin seeds had significantly lower (p<0.05) moisture, crude protein, ash and total lipid content, higher total carbohydrate and a comparable metabolizable energy content. The proximate compositions of seeds of both plants were variably affected by germination. @ JASEM Southern Nigeria is rich in nutritious food plants. Amongst them is the African yam bean (Sphenostylis stenocarpa) and fluted pumpkin (Telferia occidentalis). African yam bean which belongs to the family Papilionaceae, is grown mainly in the Southern parts of Nigeria for its edible seeds, although its tubers are also edible. It is called "Okpodudu, Ijiriji, Azama" by the Ibo people of South Eastern. The seeds can be roasted and eaten with palm kernel as snacks, or boiled and eaten with local seasoning, starchy, roots, tubers and fruit, or even converted to paste for the production of a local type of "moi moi' (Ezueh, 1984; Elegbede, 1998). It has medicinal value (Okeke et al., 2008). Fluted pumpkin (family Cucurbitaceae) is a perennial vine whose stem can grow as long as 10m. Its leaves are an important food vegetable for the people in Southern parts of Nigeria (Elegbede, 1998; Oguntona, 1998). It is called "ugu" (Igbo) and "Iroko" (Yoruba). The seeds, called "Mkpuru ugu" by the Ibo people of South Eastern Nigeria, are boiled and eaten as snack, and can be used as a soup thickener (Okeke et al., 2008). Oftentimes, the quality of foodstuffs may be improved by processing. This may involve roasting, boiling, autoclaving and even sprouting or germination. Several studies have shown that germination improves the nutritive value of cereals and legumes. Germination has also been found to decrease the levels of antinutrients present in cereals and maximizes the levels of some of the utilizable nutrients (Mohamed et al., 2007; Inyang and Zakari, 2008). In the present study, we investigated the effect of germination on the proximate composition of the seeds of African yam bean (Sphenostylis stenocarpa) and fluted pumpkin (Telferia occidentalis).

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors developed a rapid and convenient chromatographic method for authenticity control of pumpkin seed oil using the total sterol profile determined by gas-chromatography (GC) with flame ionization detector (FID).
Abstract: In food production, the quality assessment of raw materials and final products is a fundamental parameter for maintaining high quality standards. Pumpkin seed oil is rather expensive compared to other vegetable oils. Therefore, it is often adulterated by the addition of cheaper oils. In contrast to other edible oils, the content of Δ5-sterols is very low, while Δ7-sterols are dominating. The aim of this study was to develop a rapid and co nvenient chromatographic method for authenticity control of pumpkin seed oil using the total sterol profile determined by gas-chromatography (GC) with flame ionization detector (FID). Two pure vegetable oils, pumpkin seed and sunflower oil, processed by minimal technologies (cold pressing) in Romania and an adulterated pumpkin seed oil with 30% of sunflower oil were used as sample matrices in the m ethod development. The determination of Δ5- sterols, especially β-sitosterol has proven to be a good possibility to detect admixture of cheap vegetable oils.

TL;DR: In this article, an experiment was conducted to study in vitro (pepsin/pancreatin) digestion of pumpkin (Curcubita maxima) products, entire seedless fruit and seed meals, as potential feedstuffs for pigs.
Abstract: SUMMARY An experiment was conducted to study in vitro (pepsin/pancreatin) digestion of pumpkin (Curcubita maxima) products, entire seedless fruit and seed meals, as potential feedstuffs for pigs. It was found that ash content in pumpkin seeds was near one third (P<0.01) to that found in seedless pumpkins, and therefore, the reverse was true for organic matter (P<0.05). In the case of crude fibre, ether extract and crude protein (Nx6.25) values, the seeds were higher (P<0=.01) in content of these fractions as compared to seedless pumpkins. In vitro digestibility of organic matter and N revealed to be 81.1 and 70.0% for seedless pumpkins and 77.7 and 85.4% for pumpkin seeds, respectively. According to the results presented herein, it could be of interest to find out methods to increase the feeding value of pumpkin products for feeding pigs, due to the high nutritive value of either seedless pumpkins or pumpkin seeds.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors tried to test a few pumpkin seed oils for fatty acids content, trans isomers of fatty acids, composition of sterols and tocopherols, and the analytical results showed that some samples are adulterated with seed oils.
Abstract: Olive and pumpkin seed oils play a specific role in Slovenian edible oil market. That is why exact and accurate tools for assessing the oils’ quality and purity (adulteration) are needed. One of the tools is registering certain names and foodstuffs in National registers and the Register of European Union. Another tool is the analysis which can help to assess the characteristics of the oil and to classify it in categories. In the field of olive oils, this has been done excellently with the European Commission regulations. In the present work we tried to test few pumpkin seed oils for fatty acids content, trans isomers of fatty acids, composition of sterols and tocopherols. The main goal was to check the purity of the oils and understand the present situation in the field. The analytical results show that some samples are adulterated with seed oils. What can consumers benefit? From the Slovenian olive oil experience it can be concluded that the path towards better quality oils does not strictly follow analytical methods but tries to track well-established rules and definitions of quality and purity. The consumers must learn and be aware that the quality and purity can be analytically proven.

TL;DR: In this article, a komplette methodenvalidierung fur the Analyse von Seltenen Erden mittels ICP-QMS and ICP -SFMS wurde durchgefuhrt.

TL;DR: The anticestodal activity of the crude aqueous extract of Cucurbita pepo seeds was carried out on mice experimentally infected with Hymenolepis nana and more potent effects were obtained with highest concentrations which gave a total eradication of H. nana eggs and worms.
Abstract: The anticestodal activity of the crude aqueous extract of Cucurbita pepo seeds was carried out on mice experimentally infected with Hymenolepis nana. Significant effects were obtained by reducing the number of eggs and worms when compared with the control group. Five concentrations of C. pepo aqueous extracts were used (125, 250, 375, 500 and 625 mg/kg). These concentrations produced deparasitization rates of eggs of 52.7 , 61.6 , 84.2 , 89.4 and 100 , respectively at the fourth day of the treatment. Also, more potent effects were obtained with highest concentrations especially 500 mg/kg and 625 mg/kg which gave a total eradication of H. nana eggs and worms at the fifth and fourth days of the experiment, respectively.

Abstract: Wormy represent one of factor which can degrade human resource quality, considering wormy will persue physical growth and also work productivity. Research which is taken is experimental research as a mean to know energy of antelmintik infusa of pumpkin seed toward worm Ascaridia galli by in vitro and also its active compound content. Substance intake by random and then sampling is made in infusa supply with a few concentration series that is hereinafter tested by its activity as antelmintik to worm Ascaridia galli with immersion method. The data observed is time of worm death and sum up the dead worm every one clock. Statistic analysis which is used is Kruskal-Wallis continued by Mann-Whithney and also Anova and continued by Tukey. Result of research indicate that mean of time of worm death of Ascaridia galli after soaked in infusa of pumpkin seed in concentration 2,5%b/v, 5,0%b/v, 7,5%b/v, 10,0%b/v and successively is 9,46; 8,63; 6,08; and 5,83 clock. While after soaked in piperazin sitrat of concentration 0,4%b/v and NaCl 0,9%b/v mean of time of worm death is 8,96 and 32,37 hours. All series of concentration of infusa of pumpkin seed in this research own difference that has a meaning negative control of Nacl 0,9%b/v, so that infusa of pumpkin seed equal to 7,43%b/v while value of LC50 after soaked in piperzin sitrat 0,73%b/v. Result of KLT inspection indicate that infusa of pumpkin seed contain compound of powered saponin of antelmimtik. Keyword : Infusa of pumpkin seed, antelmintik energy, worm of Ascaridia galli.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors evaluated the bioactivities of some natural organic compounds extracted from rind and seeds of Pumpkin by using in vitro tests as well as, their chemical analysis.
Abstract: The main outcomes of this work were evaluation the bioactivities of some natural organic compounds extracted from rind and seeds of Pumpkin by using in vitro tests as well as, their chemical analysis. In one unique considers the first study carried out on the Pumpkin rind was found to be rich in β- carotene and minerals (Calcium, Iron, Zinc, Copper and Selenium) and a good source of protein; the potential cytotoxicity of rind extract obviously appears in its IC50 "its dose which reduces survival to 50%" which equal to 0.54 and 0.60µg using breast and liver carcinoma cell lines respectively, besides it has moderate positive antibacterial effects on Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus cereus. Pumpkin seeds were found to be rich in fat and protein with an average yield of approximately 47.03 and 35.95% respectively, as well as they not only rich in essential fatty and amino acids but also in minerals. In addition, Pumpkin seeds oil has highly positive effects on both breast and liver tumor cell lines where, it has IC50 0.40 and 0.81µg respectively. The results show very clearly that the Pumpkin seeds oil has strong positive antimicrobial effect toward Saccharomyces cerevisiae, in the same words; neither rind extract nor seeds oil of Pumpkin has any antimicrobial positive effects on Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichiea coli, Salmonella and Aspergillus niger. The results obtained in this study indicated that, Rind extract and Pumpkin seeds oil are rich sources of nutrients. Therefore, they can be consumed as food or as supplementary ingredients especially in Egypt to alleviate the problems of health and nutrients/protein malnutrition.
