TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present an example embodiment of the present invention, where a remote source communicates with a wireless controller for executing energy usage control, such as a furnace, air conditioner, water heater or heat pump.
Abstract: Remote control of energy consumption is realized using a readily installable, flexible approach. According to an example embodiment of the present invention, a remote source communicates with a wireless controller for executing energy usage control. The remote source sends signals to the wireless controller via a gateway located near or, in one implementation, forming part of the wireless controller. In response to the signals, the wireless controller sets control settings for operating one or more of a variety of equipment types, such as a furnace, air conditioner, water heater or heat pump. With this approach, wired connections from the gateway to energy-consuming equipment do not necessarily need to be made in order to effect remote energy-consumption control. For instance, when used in connection with a controller wired to the energy-consuming equipment, the gateway need only communicate wirelessly with the controller and does not necessarily need to be coupled to the energy-consuming equipment. In addition, access to the energy-consuming equipment for establishing remote energy control is not necessary; rather, the remote energy control can be effected by accessing user-friendly locations, such as those where thermostats and other controllers are typically located.

TL;DR: A remote NCS structure by implementing the adaptive Smith predictor with an online time-delay estimator is proposed, and results indicate that the significantly improved stability and motion accuracy can be reliably achieved by applying the proposed approach.
Abstract: In real applications, a remote control system is generally an integration of different networks consisting of a commercial network for message transmission and an industrial network to control the remote hardware through a communication gateway. Since the induced time-delay in network control system (NCS) may cause system instability, this paper proposes a remote NCS structure by implementing the adaptive Smith predictor with an online time-delay estimator. As the delay in a commercial network Ethernet is significantly time-varying depending on the number of end-users, the delay is estimated in this paper by processing the online measurement of the round-trip time (RTT) between the application layers of the server and the client. The adaptive Smith predictor control scheme is developed by directly applying the estimated time-delay. To prove the feasibility of the proposed remote control system, the developed design has been applied to an AC 400 W servo motor tested from a 15 km distance. The experimental results indicate that the significantly improved stability and motion accuracy can be reliably achieved by applying the proposed approach.

Abstract: A wide deployment of Internet Protocol Television (IPTV), Cable Television (CATV), Internet, User Created Contents (UCC), and Digital Television (DTV) enabled the rapid increase of channels and programs which can be selected by consumers. This was not expected when we consider the conventional television program technologies and policies. Due to these paradigm changes, hundreds of channels and programs are now available to consumers. It has become difficult and time consuming to find an interesting channel and program via the remote control or channel guide map. To refine the channel selecting processes and to satisfy the consumer's requirements, we propose the Personalized DTV Program Recommendation (PDPR) system under a cloud computing environment. The proposed PDPR system analyzes and uses the viewing pattern of consumers to personalize the program recommendations, and to efficiently use computing resources.

TL;DR: In this paper, a radio-frequency (RF) load control system includes both two-way and one-way (e.g., transmit-only) remote control devices, and provides a simple, reliable process for configuring the oneway devices into the system.
Abstract: A radio-frequency (RF) load control system includes both two-way and one-way (e.g., transmit-only) remote control devices, and provides a simple, reliable process for configuring the one-way devices into the system. The one-way device may be programmed to operate at one of a predetermined number of radio frequencies as part of a frequency-selection procedure, during which, the one-way device transmits a test command to a signal repeater of the system. If the test command is transmitted at the same frequency as the repeater, the repeater emits an audible beep to inform the user that the remote control is transmitting at the appropriate frequency. To associate the two-way devices with the system, the signal repeater streams an “enter address mode” command. To allow the one-way device to be associated with the system, the signal repeater pauses the transmission of the enter address mode command to allow the one-way device to transmit an activation request message to the signal repeater.
