Journal ArticleDOI
Inter-machine comparison of intrinsic toroidal rotation in tokamaks
John Rice,A. Ince-Cushman,J.S. deGrassie,L.-G. Eriksson,Yoshiteru Sakamoto,A. Scarabosio,Alessandro Bortolon,Keith H. Burrell,B. P. Duval,C. Fenzi-Bonizec,Martin Greenwald,R. J. Groebner,G. T. Hoang,Yoshihiko Koide,Earl Marmar,A. Pochelon,Y. Podpaly +16 more
TL;DR: In this article, the intrinsic rotation velocity has been found to increase with plasma stored energy or pressure in JET, Alcator C-Mod, Tore Supra, DIII-D, JT-60U and TCV, and to decrease with increasing plasma current in some of these cases.
Journal ArticleDOI
Spatially resolved high resolution x-ray spectroscopy for magnetically confined fusion plasmas (invited)
A. Ince-Cushman,J. E. Rice,Manfred Bitter,Matthew Reinke,K. W. Hill,M. F. Gu,E. F. Eikenberry,Ch. Broennimann,S. D. Scott,Yuri Podpaly,S.G. Lee,E.S. Marmar +11 more
TL;DR: A spatially resolving high resolution x-ray crystal spectrometer has been built and installed on the Alcator C-Mod tokamak and can be inverted to infer profiles of impurity emissivity, velocity, and temperature.
Journal ArticleDOI
Spontaneous core toroidal rotation in Alcator C-Mod L-mode, H-mode and ITB plasmas
John Rice,A. Ince-Cushman,Matthew Reinke,Y. Podpaly,Martin Greenwald,Brian LaBombard,Earl Marmar +6 more
TL;DR: In this article, the intrinsic rotation in H-mode plasmas has a relatively simple parameter dependence, with the rotation velocity proportional to the stored energy normalized to the plasma current, and is nearly always directed cocurrent.
Journal ArticleDOI
Observation of Self-Generated Flows in Tokamak Plasmas with Lower-Hybrid-Driven Current
A. Ince-Cushman,John Rice,Matthew Reinke,Martin Greenwald,Gregory Wallace,R.R. Parker,C.L. Fiore,Jerry Hughes,P.T. Bonoli,S. Shiraiwa,Amanda Hubbard,Scot A. Wolfe,Ian H. Hutchinson,Earl Marmar,Manfred Bitter,James R. Wilson,K. W. Hill +16 more
TL;DR: A comparison of the co- and countercurrent injected waves indicates that current drive (as opposed to heating) is responsible for the rotation profile modifications.
Journal ArticleDOI
Observation of Ion-Cyclotron-Frequency Mode-Conversion Flow Drive in Tokamak Plasmas
Yu-Ming Lin,John Rice,S.J. Wukitch,Martin Greenwald,Amanda Hubbard,A. Ince-Cushman,Li-Chiang Lin,Miklos Porkolab,Matthew Reinke,Naoto Tsujii +9 more
TL;DR: The experimental evidence together with numerical wave modeling suggests a local flow drive source due to the interaction between the MC ion cyclotron wave and 3He ions in D-3He plasmas with ioncyclotron range of frequencies.
