Journal ArticleDOI
CO2 enhanced oil recovery: a catalyst for gigatonne-scale carbon capture and storage deployment?
TL;DR: In this article, the authors developed an open-source techno-economic model of iterative investment in CCS with CO2-EOR (MIICE), using dynamic technology deployment modeling to assess the impact of CO2 EOR on the deployment of CCS.
Journal ArticleDOI
Water Use and Management in the Bakken Shale Oil Play in North Dakota
Robert M. Horner,Christopher B. Harto,Robert B. Jackson,Ella R. Lowry,Adam R. Brandt,Tim Yeskoo,David Murphy,Corrie Clark +7 more
TL;DR: Water use for hydraulic fracturing in the North Dakota Bakken grew 5-fold from 770 million gallons in 2008 to 4.3 billion gallons in 2012, exceeding the mean volume of water used in hydraulic fracturing and surpassing typical 4-year wastewater totals for the Barnett, Denver, and Marcellus basins.
Journal ArticleDOI
"Good versus Good Enough?" Empirical Tests of Methane Leak Detection Sensitivity of a Commercial Infrared Camera.
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that real-world marginal effectiveness of methane mitigation through periodic surveys approaches zero as leak detection sensitivity improves, and policy makers should take note of these limits while designing equivalence metrics for next-generation leak detection technologies that can trade sensitivity for cost without affecting mitigation priorities.
Journal ArticleDOI
Concurrent variation in oil and gas methane emissions and oil price during the COVID-19 pandemic
David Lyon,B. Hmiel,Ritesh Gautam,Mark Omara,Katherine A. Roberts,Z. Barkley,Kenneth J. Davis,Natasha L. Miles,Vanessa C. Monteiro,Scott J. Richardson,Stephen Conley,Mackenzie L. Smith,Daniel J. Jacob,Lu Shen,D. J. Varon,Aijun Deng,Xander H. Rudelis,Nikhil Sharma,Kyle Story,Adam R. Brandt,Mary Kang,Eric A. Kort,Anthony J. Marchese,Steven P. Hamburg +23 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors present airborne and ground-based data, supported by satellite observations, to measure weekly to monthly changes in total methane emissions in the United States' Permian Basin during a period of volatile oil prices associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.
Journal ArticleDOI
Closing the methane gap in US oil and natural gas production emissions inventories.
Jeffrey S. Rutherford,Evan D. Sherwin,Arvind P. Ravikumar,Garvin Heath,Jacob G. Englander,Daniel Cooley,David Lyon,Mark Omara,Quinn Langfitt,Adam R. Brandt +9 more
TL;DR: In this article, an inventory-based model for CH4 emissions from oil and natural gas (O&NG) systems is developed for the production-segment only, which is based on an updated synthesis of measurements from component-level field studies and allows for isolation of equipment-level contributions.
