Journal ArticleDOI
Varicocele Is Associated with Impaired Semen Quality and Reproductive Hormone Levels: A Study of 7035 Healthy Young Men from Six European Countries.
Jakob Damsgaard,Ulla Nordström Joensen,Elisabeth Carlsen,Juris Erenpreiss,Martin Blomberg Jensen,Martin Blomberg Jensen,Valentinas Matulevičius,Birute Zilaitiene,Inge A. Olesen,Antti Perheentupa,Margus Punab,Andrea Salzbrunn,Jorma Toppari,Helena E. Virtanen,Anders Juul,Niels E. Skakkebæk,Niels Jørgensen +16 more
TL;DR: The presence and increasing grade of varicocele is adversely associated with semen quality and reproductive hormone levels in young men from the general population.
Journal ArticleDOI
Alcohol and male reproductive health: a cross-sectional study of 8344 healthy men from Europe and the USA
Tina Kold Jensen,Tina Kold Jensen,Shanna H. Swan,Niels Jørgensen,Jorma Toppari,Bruce Redmon,Margus Punab,Erma Z. Drobnis,Trine B. Haugen,Birute Zilaitiene,Amy E.T. Sparks,D. Stewart Irvine,Christina Wang,Pierre Jouannet,Charlene Brazil,Uwe Paasch,Andrea Salzbrunn,Niels E. Skakkebæk,Anna-Maria Andersson +18 more
TL;DR: This study suggests that moderate alcohol intake is not adversely associated with semen quality in healthy men, whereas it was associated with higher serum testosterone levels which may be due to a changed metabolism of testosterone in the liver.
Journal ArticleDOI
Semen quality in sub-fertile range for a significant proportion of young men from the general German population: a co-ordinated, controlled study of 791 men from Hamburg and Leipzig
Uwe Paasch,Andrea Salzbrunn,Hans Juergen Glander,Kai Plambeck,Harald Salzbrunn,Sonja Grunewald,Julia Stucke,Niels E. Skakkebæk,Niels Jørgensen +8 more
TL;DR: A large fraction of young German men raised in the former East Germany and West Germany seem to have impaired semen quality that may reduce their natural fertility, and to what extent poor semen quality contributes to the low German fertility rates is investigated.
Journal ArticleDOI
Compensated reduction in Leydig cell function is associated with lower semen quality variables: a study of 8182 European young men
Niels Jørgensen,Ulla Nordström Joensen,Jorma Toppari,Margus Punab,J. Erenpreiss,Birute Zilaitiene,Uwe Paasch,Andrea Salzbrunn,Mariana F. Fernández,Helena E. Virtanen,Valentinas Matulevičius,N. Olea,Tina Kold Jensen,Jørgen Holm Petersen,N E Skakkebaek,Anna-Maria Andersson +15 more
TL;DR: Compensated reduction in Leydig cell function, defined as increased LH concentration combined with adequate testosterone production is associated with lower semen quality, which is apparent even within the WHO reference range of semen quality.
Journal ArticleDOI
Reply to Eugenio Ventimiglia, Francesco Montorsi, and Andrea Salonia's Letter to the Editor re: Jakob Damsgaard, Ulla N. Joensen, Elisabeth Carlsen, et al. Varicocele Is Associated with Impaired Semen Quality and Reproductive Hormone Levels: A Study of 7035 Healthy Young Men from Six European Countries. Eur Urol 2016;70:1019-29.

Olesen,Antti Perheentupa,Margus Punab,Andrea Salzbrunn,Jorma Toppari,Helena E. Virtanen,Anders Juul,Niels E. Skakkebæk,Niels Jørgensen +16 more
TL;DR: Ventimiglia et al. as mentioned in this paper used standardized, coordinated, and unchanged assessment methods throughout the study based on the WHO 1992 guideline and modified after their study of interlaboratory variation.
