Detection of Zika Virus in Semen.
Barry Atkinson,Pasco Hearn,Babak Afrough,Sarah Lumley,Daniel P. Carter,Emma Aarons,Andrew J. H. Simpson,Timothy Brooks,Roger Hewson +8 more
TL;DR: Although the data may indicate prolonged presence of virus in semen, this could indicate a prolonged potential for sexual transmission of this flavivirus, and could inform decisions regarding what control methods are implemented and which specimen types are best suited for diagnostic detection.
Journal ArticleDOI

ReEBOV Antigen Rapid Test kit for point-of-care and laboratory-based testing for Ebola virus disease: a field validation study.
Mara J. Broadhurst,John Daniel Kelly,Ann C. Miller,Ann C. Miller,Amanda Semper,Daniel Bailey,Elisabetta Groppelli,Elisabetta Groppelli,Andrew J. H. Simpson,Timothy Brooks,Susan Hula,Wilfred Nyoni,Alhaji B. Sankoh,Santigi Kanu,Alhaji Jalloh,Quy Ton,Quy Ton,Nicholas Sarchet,Peter M. George,Mark D. Perkins,Betsy Wonderly,Megan Murray,Megan Murray,Nira R. Pollock,Nira R. Pollock +24 more
TL;DR: The ReEBOV rapid diagnostic test had 100% sensitivity and 92% specificity in both point-of-care and reference laboratory testing in this population and with two independent readers, the test detected all patients who were positive for Ebola virus by altona real-time RT-PCR; however, this benchmark itself had imperfect sensitivity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Comparison of imipenem and ceftazidime as therapy for severe melioidosis.
Andrew J. H. Simpson,Yupin Suputtamongkol,M. D. Smith,Brian Angus,Adul Rajanuwong,Vanaporn Wuthiekanun,P.A. Howe,Amanda L. Walsh,Wipada Chaowagul,Nicholas J. White +9 more
TL;DR: Imipenem is a safe and effective treatment for acute severe melioidosis and may be considered an alternative to ceftazidime and the main outcome measures were death or treatment failure.
Journal ArticleDOI
Elevated Plasma Concentrations of Interferon (IFN)–γ and the IFN‐γ–Inducing Cytokines Interleukin (IL)–18, IL‐12, and IL‐15 in Severe Melioidosis
F. N. Lauw,Andrew J. H. Simpson,Andrew J. H. Simpson,Jan M. Prins,M. D. Smith,M. D. Smith,M. Kurimoto,S. J. H. Van Deventer,Peter Speelman,W. Chaowagul,N J White,N J White,T. van der Poll +12 more
TL;DR: Data suggest that during gram-negative sepsis, IFN-gamma production is controlled at least in part by endogenous IL-18, IL-12, and IL-15.
