The Weddell Gyre, Southern Ocean: Present Knowledge and Future Challenges
Maria Vernet,Walter Geibert,Mario Hoppema,Peter J. Brown,Christian Haas,Hartmut Hellmer,Wilfried Jokat,Loïc Jullion,Matthew R. Mazloff,Dorothee C. E. Bakker,J. A. Brearley,Peter Croot,Tore Hattermann,Tore Hattermann,Judith Hauck,Claus-Dieter Hillenbrand,Clara Jule Marie Hoppe,Oliver Huhn,Boris P. Koch,Oliver J. Lechtenfeld,Michael P. Meredith,A. C. Naveira Garabato,Eva-Maria Nöthig,Ilka Peeken,M.M. Rutgers Loeff,Sunke Schmidtko,Michael Schröder,Volker Strass,Sinhue Torres-Valdes,Sinhue Torres-Valdes,Ariane Verdy +30 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors review the state-of-the art knowledge concerning the Weddell Gyre from an interdisciplinary perspective, uncovering critical aspects needed to understand this system's role in shaping the future evolution of oceanic heat and carbon uptake over the next decades.
Journal ArticleDOI
A data assimilating model for estimating Southern Ocean biogeochemistry
Ariane Verdy,Matthew R. Mazloff +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, a Biogeochemical Southern Ocean State Estimate (B-SOSE) is introduced that includes carbon and oxygen fields as well as nutrient cycles, and the state estimate is constrained with observations while maintaining closed budgets and obeying dynamical and thermodynamic balances.
Journal ArticleDOI
Optimal phytoplankton cell size in an allometric model
TL;DR: It is found that large cells may be favored when (1) phytoplankton growth is limited by the rate at which internally stored inorganic nutrients can be converted into biomass, and (2) maximum quotas increase with size faster than minimum quotas.
Sea surface temperature variability along the path of the Antarctic circumpolar current
TL;DR: In this paper, the spatial and temporal distributions of sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) are investigated, using monthly data from the NCEP-NCAR reanalysis for the period 1980-2004.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sensitivity analysis of reactive ecological dynamics.
Ariane Verdy,Hal Caswell +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors developed sensitivity analyses for indices of transient dynamics (reactivity, the amplification envelope, and the optimal perturbation) in both continuous and discrete-time models written in matrix form.
