Journal ArticleDOI
Distinct patterns of hematopoietic stem cell involvement in acute lymphoblastic leukemia
Anders Castor,Lennart Nilsson,Ingbritt Åstrand-Grundström,Miranda Buitenhuis,Carole Ramirez,Kristina Anderson,Bodil Strömbeck,Stanislaw Garwicz,Albert N. Békássy,Kjeld Schmiegelow,Birgitte Lausen,Peter Hokland,Sören Lehmann,Gunnar Juliusson,Bertil Johansson,Sten Eirik W. Jacobsen +15 more
TL;DR: It is shown that clinically and genetically different subtypes of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) originate and transform at distinct stages of hematopoietic development.
Journal ArticleDOI
Response-guided induction therapy in pediatric acute myeloid leukemia with excellent remission rate
Jonas Abrahamsson,Erik Forestier,Jesper Heldrup,Kirsi Jahnukainen,Olafur G. Jonsson,Birgitte Lausen,Josefine Palle,Bernward Zeller,Henrik Hasle +8 more
TL;DR: The NOPHO-AML 2004 induction strategy gives an excellent remission rate with low toxic mortality in an unselected population and outcome is worse in patients with intermediate response but may be improved by intensifying consolidation in this group using SCT.
Journal ArticleDOI
Outcome of Infants Younger Than 1 Year With Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Treated With the Interfant-06 Protocol: Results From an International Phase III Randomized Study
Rob Pieters,Paola De Lorenzo,Philip Ancliffe,Luis Aversa,Benoit Brethon,Andrea Biondi,Andrea Biondi,Andrea Biondi,Myriam Campbell,Gabriele Escherich,Alina Ferster,Rebecca Gardner,Rishi S. Kotecha,Birgitte Lausen,Chi Kong Li,Franco Locatelli,Franco Locatelli,Franco Locatelli,Andishe Attarbaschi,Christina Peters,Jeffrey E. Rubnitz,Lewis B. Silverman,Jan Stary,Tomasz Szczepański,Ajay Vora,Martin Schrappe,Maria Grazia Valsecchi +26 more
TL;DR: Early intensification with postinduction myeloid-type chemotherapy courses did not significantly improve outcome for infant ALL, and KMT2A rearrangement was the strongest prognostic factor for EFS, followed by age, WBC count, and prednisone response.
Journal ArticleDOI
Improved outcome with hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in a poor prognostic subgroup of infants with mixed-lineage-leukemia (MLL)–rearranged acute lymphoblastic leukemia: results from the Interfant-99 Study
Georg Mann,Andishe Attarbaschi,Martin Schrappe,Paola De Lorenzo,Christina Peters,Ian Hann,Giulio Rossi,Maria S. Felice,Birgitte Lausen,Thierry Leblanc,Tomasz Szczepański,Alina Ferster,Gritta Janka-Schaub,Jeffrey E. Rubnitz,Lewis B. Silverman,Jan Stary,Myriam Campbell,Chi Kong Li,Ram Suppiah,Andrea Biondi,Ajay Vora,Maria Grazia Valsecchi,Rob Pieters +22 more
TL;DR: HSCT seems to be a valuable option for a subgroup of infant MLL(+) acute lymphoblastic leukemia carrying further poor prognostic factors and is associated with a 64% reduction in the risk of failure resulting from relapse or death in CR.
Journal ArticleDOI
Relapsed childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia in the Nordic countries: prognostic factors, treatment and outcome
Trausti Oskarsson,Stefan Söderhäll,Johan Arvidson,Erik Forestier,Scott Montgomery,Matteo Bottai,Birgitte Lausen,Niels Carlsen,Marit Hellebostad,Päivi M. Lähteenmäki,Ulla M. Saarinen-Pihkala,Olafur G. Jonsson,M. Heyman +12 more
TL;DR: The outcome for early combined pre-B relapses was unexpectedly poor, which supports the notion that these patients need further risk adjustment, and the development of novel approaches is urgently needed to increase survival in relapsed childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
