Journal ArticleDOI
Consuming fructose-sweetened, not glucose-sweetened, beverages increases visceral adiposity and lipids and decreases insulin sensitivity in overweight/obese humans
Kimber L. Stanhope,Jean-Marc Schwarz,Jean-Marc Schwarz,Nancy L. Keim,Steven C. Griffen,Andrew A. Bremer,James L. Graham,Bonnie Hatcher,Chad L. Cox,Artem Dyachenko,Wei Zhang,John P. McGahan,Anthony Seibert,Ronald M. Krauss,Sally Chiu,Ernst J. Schaefer,Masumi Ai,Seiko Otokozawa,Katsuyuki Nakajima,Katsuyuki Nakajima,Takamitsu Nakano,Carine Beysen,Marc K. Hellerstein,Lars Berglund,Peter J. Havel +24 more
TL;DR: The data suggest that dietary fructose specifically increases DNL, promotes dyslipidemia, decreases insulin sensitivity, and increases visceral adiposity in overweight/obese adults.
Journal ArticleDOI
Substituting dietary saturated fat with polyunsaturated fat changes abdominal fat distribution and improves insulin sensitivity
Lucinda K. M. Summers,Barbara A. Fielding,H. A. Bradshaw,Vera Ilic,Carine Beysen,M. L. Clark,N. R. Moore,Keith N. Frayn +7 more
TL;DR: Dietary manipulation would be more readily achieved by the general population than the current recommendations and could result in considerable improvement in insulin sensitivity, reducing the risk of developing Type II diabetes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Measurement of protein turnover rates by heavy water labeling of nonessential amino acids.
Robert Busch,Yoo-Kyeong Kim,Richard A. Neese,Valerie Schade-Serin,Michelle L. Collins,Mohamad Awada,James L Gardner,Carine Beysen,Michael E. Marino,Lisa M. Misell,Marc K. Hellerstein,Marc K. Hellerstein +11 more
TL;DR: 2H2O labeling permits sensitive, quantitative, operationally simple measurements of protein turnover in vivo by the rise-to-plateau approach, especially for proteins with slow constitutive turnover.
Journal ArticleDOI
Acetyl-CoA Carboxylase Inhibition Reverses NAFLD and Hepatic Insulin Resistance but Promotes Hypertriglyceridemia in Rodents.
Leigh Goedeke,Jamie Bates,Daniel F. Vatner,Rachel J. Perry,Ting Wang,Ricardo Ramirez,Li Li,Matthew W. Ellis,Dongyan Zhang,Kari E. Wong,Carine Beysen,Gary W. Cline,Adrian S. Ray,Gerald I. Shulman +13 more
TL;DR: Oral administration of Compound 1 preferentially inhibited ACC enzymatic activity in the liver, reduced hepatic malonyl‐CoA levels, and enhanced hepatic ketogenesis, and these studies warrant further investigation into the therapeutic utility of liver‐directed ACC inhibition for the treatment of NAFLD and hepatic insulin resistance.
Journal ArticleDOI
Potential mechanisms leading to the abnormal lipid profile in patients with rheumatoid arthritis versus healthy volunteers and reversal by tofacitinib.
Christina Charles-Schoeman,Roy Fleischmann,Jean Davignon,Howard Schwartz,Scott M. Turner,Carine Beysen,Mark Milad,Marc K. Hellerstein,Zhen Luo,Irina Kaplan,R. Riese,Andrea Zuckerman,Iain B. McInnes +12 more
TL;DR: This study compared cholesterol and lipoprotein kinetics in patients with active RA with those in matched healthy volunteers to compare cholesterol and lipid metabolism associated with RA.
