Journal ArticleDOI
Haemagglutinin mutations responsible for the binding of H5N1 influenza A viruses to human-type receptors
Shinya Yamada,Yasuo Suzuki,Takashi Suzuki,Mai Q. Le,Chairul A. Nidom,Yuko Sakai-Tagawa,Yukiko Muramoto,Mutsumi Ito,Maki Kiso,Taisuke Horimoto,Kyoko Shinya,Toshihiko Sawada,Makoto Kiso,Taiichi Usui,Takeomi Murata,Yipu Lin,Alan Hay,Lesley F. Haire,D.J. Stevens,Rupert J. Russell,Rupert J. Russell,Steven J. Gamblin,John J. Skehel,Yoshihiro Kawaoka +23 more
TL;DR: It is shown that some H5N1 viruses isolated from humans can bind to both human and avian receptors, in contrast to those isolated from chickens and ducks, which recognize the avian receptor exclusively.
Journal ArticleDOI
Drosophila RNAi screen identifies host genes important for influenza virus replication
Linhui Hao,Akira Sakurai,Tokiko Watanabe,Ericka M. Sorensen,Chairul A. Nidom,Michael A. Newton,Paul G. Ahlquist,Yoshihiro Kawaoka +7 more
TL;DR: The feasibility of using genome-wide RNAi screens in Drosophila to identify previously unrecognized host proteins that are required for influenza virus replication is demonstrated and could accelerate the development of new classes of antiviral drugs for chemoprophylaxis and treatment.
Journal ArticleDOI
Biological and structural characterization of a host-adapting amino acid in influenza virus.
Shinya Yamada,Masato Hatta,Bart L. Staker,Shinji Watanabe,Masaki Imai,Kyoko Shinya,Yuko Sakai-Tagawa,Mutsumi Ito,Makoto Ozawa,Makoto Ozawa,Tokiko Watanabe,Saori Sakabe,Chengjun Li,Jin Hyun Kim,Peter J. Myler,Peter J. Myler,Isabelle Phan,Amy C. Raymond,Eric R. Smith,Robin Stacy,Chairul A. Nidom,Simon M. Lank,Roger W. Wiseman,Benjamin N. Bimber,David H. O’Connor,Gabriele Neumann,Lance Stewart,Yoshihiro Kawaoka +27 more
TL;DR: It is reported that a basic amino acid at position 591 of PB2 can compensate for the lack of lysine at position 627 and confers efficient viral replication to pandemic H1N1 viruses in mammals.
Journal ArticleDOI
Reassortment between avian H5N1 and human H3N2 influenza viruses creates hybrid viruses with substantial virulence
Chengjun Li,Masato Hatta,Chairul A. Nidom,Yukiko Muramoto,Shinji Watanabe,Gabriele Neumann,Yoshihiro Kawaoka +6 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that reassortment between an avian H5N1 virus with low pathogenicity in mice and a human virus could result in highly pathogenic viruses and that the human virus PB2 segment functions in the background of an avan H5 N1 virus, enhancing its virulence.
Journal ArticleDOI
Influenza A (H5N1) Viruses from Pigs, Indonesia
Chairul A. Nidom,Ryo Takano,Shinya Yamada,Yuko Sakai-Tagawa,Syafril Daulay,Didi Aswadi,Takashi Suzuki,Yasuo Suzuki,Kyoko Shinya,Kiyoko Iwatsuki-Horimoto,Yukiko Muramoto,Yoshihiro Kawaoka +11 more
TL;DR: Pigs may serve as intermediate hosts in which this avian virus can adapt to mammals, according to the TOC summary.
