Journal ArticleDOI
Environmental exposure to endotoxin and its relation to asthma in school-age children.
Charlotte Braun-Fahrländer,Josef Riedler,Udo Herz,Waltraud Eder,Marco Waser,Leticia Grize,Soyoun Maisch,David Carr,Florian Gerlach,Albrecht Bufe,Roger Lauener,Rudolf Schierl,Harald Renz,Dennis Nowak,Erika von Mutius +14 more
TL;DR: A subject's environmental exposure to endotoxin may have a crucial role in the development of tolerance to ubiquitous allergens found in natural environments.
Journal ArticleDOI
Exposure to farming in early life and development of asthma and allergy: a cross-sectional survey
Josef Riedler,Charlotte Braun-Fahrländer,Waltraud Eder,Mynda Schreuer,Marco Waser,Soyoun Maisch,David Carr,Rudi Schierl,Dennis Nowak,Erika von Mutius +9 more
TL;DR: Long-term and early-life exposure to stables and farm milk induces a strong protective effect against development of asthma, hay fever, and atopic sensitisation in children.
Journal ArticleDOI
Exposure to Environmental Microorganisms and Childhood Asthma
Markus J. Ege,Melanie Mayer,Anne-Cécile Normand,Jon Genuneit,William O.C.M. Cookson,Charlotte Braun-Fahrländer,Dick Heederik,Renaud Piarroux,Erika von Mutius +8 more
TL;DR: Children living on farms had lower prevalences of asthma and atopy and were exposed to a greater variety of environmental microorganisms than the children in the reference group, and this exposure explains a substantial fraction of the inverse relation between asthma and growing up on a farm.
Journal ArticleDOI
Improving health through policies that promote active travel: a review of evidence to support integrated health impact assessment
Audrey de Nazelle,Mark J. Nieuwenhuijsen,Josep M. Antó,Michael Brauer,David J. Briggs,Charlotte Braun-Fahrländer,Nick Cavill,Ashley R Cooper,Hélène Desqueyroux,Scott Fruin,Gerard Hoek,Luc Int Panis,Nicole A.H. Janssen,Michael Jerrett,Michael Joffe,Zorana Jovanovic Andersen,Elise van Kempen,Simon Kingham,Nadine Kubesch,Kevin M. Leyden,Kevin M. Leyden,Julian D. Marshall,Jaume Matamala,Giorgos Mellios,Michelle A. Mendez,Hala Nassif,David Ogilvie,Rosana Peiró,Katherine Pérez,Ari Rabl,Martina S. Ragettli,Daniel A. Rodriguez,David Rojas,Pablo Ruiz,James F. Sallis,Jeroen Terwoert,Jean-François Toussaint,Jouni T. Tuomisto,Moniek Zuurbier,Erik Lebret +39 more
TL;DR: Evaluating impacts of active travel policies is highly complex; however, many associations can be quantified, and identifying health-maximizing policies and conditions requires integrated HIAs.
Journal ArticleDOI
Toll-like receptor 2 as a major gene for asthma in children of European farmers
Waltraud Eder,Waltraud Eder,Walter T. Klimecki,Lizhi Yu,Erika von Mutius,Josef Riedler,Charlotte Braun-Fahrländer,Dennis Nowak,Fernando D. Martinez +8 more
TL;DR: The results suggest that genetic variation in TLR2 is a major determinant of the susceptibility to asthma and allergies in children of farmers.
