Journal ArticleDOI
Covalent Modification of DNA Regulates Memory Formation
TL;DR: The results demonstrate that DNA methylation is dynamically regulated in the adult nervous system and that this cellular mechanism is a crucial step in memory formation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Inhibitors of class 1 histone deacetylases reverse contextual memory deficits in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease.
Mark Kilgore,Courtney A. Miller,Daniel M. Fass,Daniel M. Fass,Krista M. Hennig,Krista M. Hennig,Stephen J. Haggarty,Stephen J. Haggarty,J. David Sweatt,Gavin Rumbaugh +9 more
TL;DR: Preclinical results indicate that targeted inhibition of class I HDAC isoforms is a promising avenue for treating the cognitive deficits associated with early stage AD.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evidence That DNA (Cytosine-5) Methyltransferase Regulates Synaptic Plasticity in the Hippocampus
Jonathan M. Levenson,Tania L. Roth,Farah D. Lubin,Courtney A. Miller,I-Chia Huang,Priyanka Desai,Lauren M. Malone,J. David Sweatt +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, the role of DNA methyltransferase (DNMT) activity in regulating the induction of synaptic plasticity was examined and it was found that the DNA within promoters for reelin and brain-derived neurotrophic factor exhibited rapid and dramatic changes in cytosine methylation when DNMT activity was inhibited.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cortical DNA methylation maintains remote memory.
Courtney A. Miller,Courtney A. Miller,Cristin F. Gavin,Cristin F. Gavin,Jason A White,R. Ryley Parrish,Avinash Honasoge,Christopher R Yancey,Ivonne M Rivera,Maria D. Rubio,Gavin Rumbaugh,Gavin Rumbaugh,J. David Sweatt +12 more
TL;DR: This work found that persistent, gene-specific cortical hypermethylation was induced in rats by a single, hippocampus-dependent associative learning experience and pharmacologic inhibition 1 month after learning disrupted remote memory.
Journal ArticleDOI
Molecular substrates for retrieval and reconsolidation of cocaine-associated contextual memory.
TL;DR: The finding that COC-conditioned place preference activates ERK, CREB, Elk-1, and Fos in the nucleus accumbens core (AcbC) but not shell indicates the necessity of the AcbC ERK signaling pathway for drug-paired contextual cue memories and suggests that these strong memories can become susceptible to disruption by therapeutic agents.
